I have heard that Hi'ilawe is a song that slack key players must know. Before the evening is over there will be a re-quest for that song. Almost every where you go.
It's kinda like, Hawaii Aloha, or Aloha Oe, when ever you leave these are the songs you'll hear.
When you hear, or playing slack key, what tune comes to your mind? Everyone must have there favorite, but again, Hi'ilawe will always be the.... ONE???

Hi'ilawe is like the Hawai'ian "Stairway to Heaven!"

I do...from Keola's first (now OOP) book. Send Keola an email asking if it's OK for me to give you a copy and I'd be happy to send it. |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

I think it depends a lot on how long you've been listening to/playing slack key and whether you grew up in Hawai`i or not but you still realize pretty quickly how big of an impact Hi`ilawe had/has. Others I'd put up there (for me) would be Opihi Moemoe, Old-Timer's Hula, and Nanea Kou Maka. |

I've seen a few different arrangements of Hi'ilawe (in Keola and Mark's book published by Mel Bay and a few arrangements in different tunings in McClelland's Advanced Slack Key book). Is there a favorite arrangement out there on this tuning? I'm intrigued by out-of-print arrangement published by Keola but I don't have a copy of it. |

Ozzie has a swell arrangement of Hi'ilawe in Leonard's C. He gives out the tab at some of his workshops. At George's camp, he gave out one in Taro Patch, but I like the other one lots better. Like Keola's arrangement (in his book with Mark), the Taro Patch version sounds too staccato. The Leonard's C version is one that he should include in his instruction books, because it really works the low C chord and the "Hi`ilawe vamp": ask him.
(Not-Really-A-Plug: Ozzie's arrangement is even easier to play in Atta's C, and I suppose most arrangements would be. :-)

Of course "Gabby's" will always be a classic, But there's 2 that i really like. One is the way Sarah sing's it.
It's Aunty Alice style of playing, But Sarah's vocals gives it another flavor. ( very sweet. )
And the other Hi'ilawe was from "Pekelo" Cosma. If you ever have a chance to hear it, I promise you'll feel the same as me when i first heard it.
Out of all the Hi'ilawe's i've heard, this one stands out....BIG TIME!
If Pekelo left the words out, and your listening to the melody, you would never know the song was Hi'ilawe. One of a kine.
I enjoy all the other Hi'ilawe's that the other artist do But when you hear something different? It jus catches your ear.

hi kevin!
over here on the really big island, it seems that led's version "radio hula" is a standard: when you can get your way through led's version, then you've accomplished something... then again, i just recently heard uluwehi guerrero's version, and fell in love with it.
see you all soon! aloha, keith |

I like Owana Salazar's Hi'ilawe. She had the guts to step out on her own and I think it came out great. Raymond San Jose |

Sarah, you need to record your version and let me put it up on SoundClick so everyone can hear it. Or does someone have a recording of her live performance? |

Aloha e Kevin, thank you for your kind words!
Aloha e Craig, I just sing it the "old fashioned" way. I like that way, for me...and I love the song (how not to ??? )
Aloha kakou,
I was going to add two thoughts to this thread...
Has anyone heard Akoni Malaca's version of Hi'ilawe on his Palapalai Patch album?
I really like this version too. Akoni has a marvellous way of blending chant and singing, which again "takes me back" to the olden times before, and he does it in this version. Also, he uses the ukulele sort of percussively to remind us of ipu. Anyway, check um out . http://www.mele.com/v3/info/1491.htm
By the way (...here I digress) for what it's worth: on that same album are two other songs that I think are amazing. The first song, Kealoha (written by Akoni's mom), and the next to last, Waipi'o (written by Akoni), a picture of times before, when people lived and fished in Waipi'o valley. The sound clips don't do them justice.
Back to Hi'ilawe.... in that beautiful "Kanaloa" song by Anjani, what does she do but incorporate Ozzie playing slack key, and he plays something reminiscent of Hi'ilawe woven into the music. This, to me, is part of what just grabs me about the whole song: by playing Hi'ilawe sounds in there, it just washes old Hawai'i over you, and you feel taken back to the times before.... and that is perfect for setting the tone for the lyrics of the song. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/anjani
