Another silly question from a new player. 1. The low G-string is the same diameter on concert and soprano just longer?
2. If I use a low G-string are the chords the same as the standard strings?
My guess is yes to both. I'm having fun but I'm not too musical.
Thanks

1. I'm guessing they usually are, but since the scale length is different, one could be fatter if you sought perfection. Guess 2, it would be the concert with the fatter string.
2. For sure, yes. Same chords.
Fun is what ukuleles are about, isn't it. :-)

Sure, why wouldn't they be? Music is about what sounds good, not what is acceptable.

Umm...okay, was I or was I not supposed to blush at the thought of pull-offs on a G string? |

Well, I'm another one who doesn’t know what pull offs are. Could someone let us new users know what it means.
As soon as I get around to it I am going to put the lower G string on my uke. I have been working on Bolero but need take the music lower. The main problem I have now (other than my musical ability) is that I start out with Bolero and always end up with Midnight from Cats. The notes are almost identical in the beginning and then I veer off. Pretty funny for a beginner.

Konacat, A pulloff is executed by fretting a note with the left hand, plucking the string with your right hand (or pick if you use one) and releasing or pulling off the fretted note (without plucking the string again with your right hand)to either another fretted note or an open string.
You can see an example in my most recent transcription of Ku'u Hoa. If you download it from my website at www.rockslide.org/Ukulele_Tab.html just look at the 5th measure and you will see a pulloff from the 4th fret of the E string (G#)to the open E note.
BTW, what version of Bolero are you working on? Do you have an mp3 you could email me. I would like to tak a listen. Dominator

Thanks for the info Dominator. Also thanks for the your site. It’s mostly beyond me as a beginner but you do good work. Trust you are feeling better day-by-day during your recovery period. Remember, no one heals overnight so take it easy on yourself.
I am not using any music at the moment. I am using my memory which is probably why I keep making errors. Probably have at least 3 versions of Bolero but I believe they are all in my trailer and I have not had time to get them. I'm working with individual notes since I feel the music would lend itself to this best. I have not made it far enough along to worry about the scale yet. My thoughts are that with the low G string I can probably fit the music to my soprano and it would be fun. Just remember that everything I’ve told you is from a non-musical player with no lessons and 3 months of self-training.

Konacat,
Hey, that's right, "Bolero" and "Memory" do have the same initial notes, or at least close, but the rhythm and note durations are quite different. I'd never noticed that. |
