Aloha, I'm looking for ideas and help with Salomila - I've been working with Patrick Landeza's arrangement from his DVD/CD in which he mentions that there are alternate verses for the section that repeats (m4 to m13) and that he'll demonstrate them but auwe that stuff no stay! Don't know if the material was dropped on the proverbial editing room floor or if it was just overlooked but I'm a beginner and need stuff spoon fed to me - can't figure it out on my own yet. All I've been able to do so far is modify m8 to match the feel of m6. I like the way m6 sounds so I finally figured out how to make m8 sound like it. But beyond that I don't have any ideas of how to come up with alternative verses. Any help with where I might find some ideas or better yet some tab to play with would be appreciated.

You can purchase all the tab for Patrick's DVD from Bruce Lamb at The Guitar Workshop:

BTW, there's a typo on the DVD...the name of the song should be "Salomila". |

I've got the tab (the whole CD actually) but it only has the one verse - no alternate verses. Its ok the way its written but repeating m4 to m13 exactly the same three times sounds too plain. (ok so m10 to m13 is only repeated twice but you get my drift.) I've tried to listen to Ledward Kaapana's CD to get some ideas but I'm way too inexperienced to be able to make the leap from hearing him play to figuring out something I could play.

Akahele, I found Ikaika Brown's version from "Kalo Man" CD useful because the pace was slower than Led and easier for me to follow. I could even keep-up with him after a couple hours of practice! Patrick helped me with LIVE lessons on it too.
Also try Led's medley "Salomila New Opihi Moemoe" from his "Black Sand" CD ; the medley allows points of departure and it's a slow version to boot.
Good luck, and post the results for us!
Try the shareware "Amazing Slow Downer" It allows you to slow the track without affecting pitch; very useful. I wish I could use it on Leds VHS I bought!
You can find it here for Mac OS8/9 or OS X, and Windows too:

Ross, Thanks for the info - if I read the info right at ronimusic I suppose you could just take the audio output from your vcr plug it into your computers soundcard, use something like Musicmatch jukebox or realplayer to record it as a wav file, then use the amazing slow downer to take it apart. Granted its a few extra steps but if there's a will, there's a way You also might need a trip to Radio Shack for some audio cables but it might be worth it.

Aloha kakahiaka Akahele! My name's slackkey Bill from Maui's Waihe'e Valley Kiho'alu Gang...Oh! Then there's Keith Marzullo, Andy Wang, Sarah and Reid!
Try playing Salomila in open-G (if you don't already do) I find going there, rather fun! Begin with the 5/4 6/4 bassline....When you already know how the song goes, it's that much more easier.
I begin the music melody from the 7th fret...with my index finger on the 3rd-string....middle finger on 8th fret 2nd-string....pinky on 9th fret 1st-string. Strum from the 5th bass-string on down once...can you hear it?
Now, while holding down your fingers on the designated positions, strum the tree strings (just them) three times. That's the first three words ("shine the light")
Now remove middle finger... place index finger on the 9th fret (leaving 2nd string open), place ring finger on the 10th fret, 1st string. (This will be the next position).
Are you with me so far? Now you have two positions. First is "shine the light" 2nd is "on" now going back the first again, you now have "shine the light on" Try it...strum 1st position 3-times, 2nd position 1-time back to 1st 1-time Now position your index finger on 3rd-string 4th fret...2nd-string open, ring finger on 5th fret 1st string. Pluck 1st three strings 3-times. This is the 3rd position.
Putting them together should sound like "shine the light on me Salomila" But I better stop here!....I may already be confusing you!
This what I call backyard show and teach. Ha! ha! ha!. I'm no pro, but I love to play! Anyways let me know how my period of backyard instructions were okay! Take care!

Aloha From The Island Of Maui Hawaii Cathy! Actually, that's how I played Salomila from the get-go, and being that I'm no pro, can't read tabs, don't know chord arrangements, no can read music....me! I JUS'PRESS!!!!
All the songs that I play, I've listened to first then came up with my own "slack key stylings". My advice to everyone was to not try and play exactly like the Artists...use them as your guidelines, and come up with something that is all you!!!!!
But knowing how to read Tabs, Notes and Chords....does have their advantages. I strictly play by ear only. That way is easiest for me. I'm glad you were able to follow my backyard style period of cyber-instructions! Ha! ha! ha!
Keep'PRESS'N Cathy! Some day we'll cross-paths. Take care, God Bless to you and all the rest! A Hui Hou! Malama Pono....
