Slack Key Pickin' Poi Finger Lickin' (Larry W. Jones 6/08/2002)
I heard a song about a slack-key Heaven and it sure did make me sad.
So I went to a luau at Germaine's and for that I sure am glad.
'cause..
John!, no such thing as a slack-key Heaven. Couldn't quite picture it anyhow.
No such luck. They all got stuck with their fingers in the poi at Germaine's luau.
On the big stage was Gabby Pahinui and the Gabby Pahinui band.
Slack-key pickin', Poi-finger lickin' and man did it sound grand!
They played Pu`uanahulu, Aloha Ka Manini, and Ipo Lei Manu too.
Sons of Hawaii sang Kaua`i Beauty with the beauty of Ki ho'alu.
I heard soft and sweet Pua Tuberose. Got a chill for what it's worth.
There singing solo, Waimea cowboy, It was Sonny Chillingworth.
From somewhere over the big rainbow, Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau and
Iz Kamakawiwo'ole, a wonderful world. His music's still with us now.
Well, there may not be a slack-key Heaven, but I'm not really surprised
to find 'em slack-key pickin', poi-finger lickin' in this slack-key paradise.
Keoki said there's no finger lickin' poi in Heaven or na hoku hanohano stars.
Like Jerry, Byrd of Paradise and Sol Ho'opi'i, masters of the steel guitars.
Are you staying at the luau finger lickin' poi, or are you just passing through?
Seems all the ukeleles and the slack-key masters didn't fit in that big canoe.
Well, if you think I'm crazy, bring your ukelele and I'll show you where to find some joy.
George Winston's there recordin' those slack-key masters with a dancin' cat lickin' poi.
When I get back home, I'm gonna tune that dial and look for Coconut Joe.
