Most well known as lead guitarist of the group Hapa, Barry has released his first solo effort with Instrumental Peace. This CD is a transitional album for both artist and listener featuring 2 songs from Hapa's debut album, 4 Flanagan originals and 3 covers (Earl Klugh's Close To Your Heart, Peter Frampton's Penny For Your Thoughts and Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue). There are 9 tracks in total taking the listener through an acoustic tour influenced by Hawaiian, jazz and blues.

The opening song, titled Rodeo Drive, Makawao, has a familiar slack key (taro patch tuning) feel and is injected with signature Flanagan leads. The eight instrumental tracks are just what Barry Flanagan fans needed since Hapa's last release in 1999. However, without vocals Keli`i Kaneali`i's absence is even more noticeable. But hey, we're adjusting and judging by the lyrics of Barry's only track with vocals, he's adjusting too.

quote:
Goodbye old friend
How I hate to see you go
I'm gonna miss you
I just want you to know
I'm really gonna miss you
Goodbye old friend
If you're really leavin'
Please say you'll be back again
9 songs definitely left me hungry for more. I enjoyed this album and look forward to Barry's next project. Instrumental Peace should be in stores any time now if it's not available already.

Andy
