Just joined yesterday. Just learned about your site yesterday, so I was never a lurker. Would have been better if I had because now you have 2 Craigs. You'll be able to tell us apart because I'll be the less knowledgeable one.
I don't play slack key but steel guitar. I especially like tricone lap steel in Sol Hoopii tradition. I also keep a Dobro in C6 for "modern" Hawaiian repertoire (I'm a fan of Greg Sardihna and Bobby Ingano, among others).
I'm from San Diego - actually National City, which is just south of San Diego. I'm not saying it's a bad place - it isn't - but around here they call it "Nasty City."
I already committed my first faux paux yesterday when I offered the use of my tab for a tune. Sorry about that... I should really know better but I love to share.
The "mabuhay" is due to wife being from the Philippines. We've been married 22 wonderful years.
So, mabuhay, everyone!!! Let's play some Hawaiian music!!!
Craig.

Hey Craig! We would love to have you grace us with your steel guitar if you feel like making it up to North County next Wednesday night. We'll be meeting at the M3 Espresso Cafe in Oceanside at 7 p.m. You can get directions here (it's just off the 78):

Hope to see you there but will definitely see you here if not! Also, check out this site for San Diego slack key concerts (the next one is 5/16):

cpatch: thank you so much for the invite! Unfortunately I'm involved with a public forum that night. When is the next time you meet? |

Aloha mai e Craig 'Elua (Number Two!)
Steel guitar in the tradition of Greg Sardinha. HU! Greg is amazing. We heard him live with Ku'uipo Kumukahi one time. He was superb. It was funny though: I thought he was "scanning the audience" as he played, since his eyes were going back and forth...and then I realized, no, he's not watching us, he listening to the music in his head!

Hi, Sarah. I'm convinced that some of this "new breed" from the islands are in the musical genius category. These are some seriously talented folks!
It seems not all that long ago it was difficult to find Hawaiian steel guitar performed on the Dobro. Then Barney Isaacs concluded his career with a Dobro (and I might add: wonderful!) album.
BTW - off topic, but yesterday one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time passed away. Barney Kessel had been debilitated by a serious of strokes back in '92. But for the last 12 years he could still listen to and enjoy jazz music. I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Kessel about 14 years ago and even engaged him in a conversation about Django Reinhardt. Barney was one of the few people left on this earth who'd known Django personally.
Django's gone. Now Barney is gone.
Sad, sad, sad.

Craig, just so you don't make an unnecessary trip up to Oceanside, our meeting location is in flux at the moment. As soon as we figure out where it will be I'll try to remember to post here. Or you can email me at craig @ patchett.com |
