Aloha T/P Ohana,

Just got a call from Milton Lau of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festivals and Na Hoku Productions who scheduled me for the Molokai Style Slack Key Concert scheduled Saturday, June 19, 2004 and the Maui Style Slack Key Concert at the MACC on Sunday, June 27, 2004. Since I'll be flying to Maui Friday morning to jam and promo the concert with Brother Noland, Milton and Mike Kaawa, I wanted to share with all of you that the Blue Marlin Bar & Grill will again hold a 'Slack Key Week' at the restaurant at Maalaea Harbor on Maui from Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the event day at the MACC.

I'll be there Friday and Saturday with the host Boy Kanae. Come by and enjoy the fun, a repeat like last year! I am hoping that my cellist can make the tour with me this year.

Aloha All and Be Safe,
Donald Kaulia

Yo! I may be there, depending on the three people I am sharing a car with... I will have Gordon Burt (a member of Taro Patch Net) and our wives with me. It would be great to see you in action!

By the way, I am heading to Oahu this weekend to catch Led who is playing with a couple of Nashville bluegrassers - Rob Ickes and Tim Stafford. They are playing at Kapono's on Sunday night. I will make sure I ask him about playing on the Big Island.

Aloha Don,

Too bad that the Blue Marlin is doing the "slack key" series on
the SAME DAYS as George Kahumoku's Workshop. There will be
a bunch of slack key players (myself included) who will NOT come
to the Blue Marlin because they will be in the Workshop from 8AM
to 10PM on the same days. I would not miss the kanikapila's at
George's workshop even if I was guaranteed a good time at the
Blue Marlin (especially after all the effort and expense to get
there).

They would get a whole lot more slack-key enthusiasts showing up
at the Blue Marlin if they did their slack-key specials either
before the Thursday nite or after the Saturday nite before the
festival. Sunday nite (right after the festival - would be a primo
nite for a jam at the Blue Marlin. hint...hint...)

You may recall that Cynthia & I did not show up till after the
festival last year to play with you at the Blue Marlin. (and thanks
again for the honor of playing with you ). We were in the workshop,
jamming with George, Cyril, Dennis Kamakahi, David Kamakahi, Carlos
Andrade, Ozzie Kotani, and Owanna, etc., etc. on Thursday thru
Saturday nites!

Hi Don,

I may try to make it to the Blue Marlin Bar & Grill! While I am not attending a camp this year, I will be visiting O`ahu at that time.

Trying to see if we can hop over to Maui for the festival. It would be great to catch up with the Maui `ohana and others who are visiting for the camps.

You guys in Maui and O`ahu should be seeing an email from me soon.

Andy

Konabob,

That's cool that you're going to catch Rob Ickes. It sounds like an interesting show. Rob has a hard-edged, bluesy, bluegrass style but he can also play some really sweet stuff. He's got great tone and technique and is a pretty innovative dobro player. I'm sure you'll pick up some musical ideas from him.

I had the good fortune to take a workshop from him at a bluegrass camp in Grass Valley last year. He's a heck of a nice guy and very generous about sharing his knowledge. I hope you get a chance to meet him.

Alright...ok..den,
I called Boy to set up Sunday evening at the Blue Marlins Bar & Grill so that everybody will have a place to jam after the festival. Boy said he might move it to a Wailuku Restaurant that just opened on Vineyard Street (the old Ramones) in Happy Valley. That way the drive is short for every body. I problaby will come only on Sunday since I have other obligations on Friday and Saturday. I won't be able to drop by George's evening workshop because of my own schedule. So, thanks to Boy Kanae for the Sunday After Concert Jam. While on Maui, tune in to AM900 KNUI so you know what's happening during Kihoalu Week on Maui before Sunday, June 27, 2004. No forget, on Saturday, June 19, 2004 Molokai will get their very 1st Slack Key Concert Molokai Style...I'll be there with the rest of the regulars.

Until then, keep up the slacking and I'll see you all soon.

Jus press and press 'em clean!!!

Love and Aloha,

Don Kauli'a

Oh,
If you ever visit Big Island, I'm playing with Kona Bob every 2nd Sunday and the Kona Brewery right across the way from the King Kam Hotel below Taco Bell. Bob, Lenard and myself have a very distinctive sound...drop on by.
I got offered a regular venue at the Four Seasons in July...evenings...I'll let you guys know soon. I've been busy with my kids who started a band of their own. Aloha, Don

Don,

Hey this is great news - A post-festival kani ! !

This will be a good way to ease up from the excitment of
peforming at the festival (if you can call it peforming).

A few of us last year wanted to go out to dinner as a group
after the show (which is the end of George's Workshop too),
so we ended up going to Saeng's Thai Restaurant in Wailuku.

Sounds like this place is close by (it can't be too far from
anywhere else in Wailuku!).

So this place is new... Hmmm... What kine food they serve?

(We will be hungry buggahs... I am omnivorous but my better
half is vegetarian)

...and can they fit lotsa folks?

(so we can invite most folks from the workshop)

This place is right across from Saeng's Thai Food...used to be called Ramones then got several new names. I will announce it on during my session to remind people...or maybe not....they can accomodate 300 at a time. I know Boy & Pani will be there with their band and open mic for just 'bout any body....I'll drop by for a 10min session and mingle and then EAT!!!

See you there!!!
