Aloha from Kauai everyone. Let me relate quickly my background in music and intruments. None. Well thats not all the way true. My dad has played the guitar ever since i can remember. He taught himself to play, and is mostly into playing the blues. He has an old Ibanez acoustic laying around and I told him i wanted to learn how to play slack key. He bought me the Ozzie Kotani book and cd. I pretty much mastered the first song but then my mom and dad moved to hilo. Well ive decided i want to start playing again. So i found myself on musiciansfriend.com looking at guitars. My budget unfortunatly wont allow me to spend what i want on a quality guitar. I had my eye on a Martin D15...but its a little pricey right now. After lots of research and based on reviews i chose a Takamine GS330S. Im not sure if it was the right one or not. It fit my budget well. It should be here by the middle of this week. So....to make a short story long, what do you guys think? Will this be ok for my first guitar? Also, is Ozzie's book good for me? I have never really touched a guitar before this, so any help would really be appreciated.

Oh...BTW, Olomana's old song, Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u, is that slack key or standard? I know there is 2 guitars playing the melody. I would love to know how to play that. Do you guys know if they have tabs for that song, or any other?....

Thanks in advance....

I like the GS330S. It's a great guitar on the budget. You can find them on Ebay for around $150, sometimes with a case. It's a solid cedar top/laminated mahogany sides and has a nice sound.
It seems like Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u is played, at least by one guitar, in standard tuning in the key of E, I think.
Good luck on the guitar hunt. There are lots of good guitars out there to play. Jesse Tinsley

I own 2 Takamines, one for over 25 years. All Takamines are cool except for one. A girl who smashed my brand new truck once upon a long time ago.

Takamines are excellent guitars for the money...just make sure you take it to a local guitar shop when you get it and have the action set properly (it makes a world of difference and should cost around $25-$40).

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.
