Aloha...

We will be staying in Kona Hawaii for a week in September and I would like to rent a guitar while we're there to avoid having to transport mine on the airplane. Anyone have suggestions for where I could rent a guitar in the Kona area? Any 'must see' slack key venues we should check out while we're there?

Malaho...

There is a music store in the old industrial area that might rent. Sorry can't recall the name.
Must see slack key - John Keawe. He plays every Monday at the Kona Village Resort and every other Saturday at the Bamboo restaurant in Hawi. Check his web sight for other venues johnkeawe.com

I don't know about rentals. I've flown my guitar into Kona and Hilo many times without a hitch.

JimC is right, you have to see John Keawe. Here's his schedule for September

Sat 4 --------------Bamboo Restaurant------------6:30 to 9:30pm
Sun 12 ------------Kings Shops Waikoloa------- 4 to 6pm
Tues 14 & 28-----Kings Shops Waikoloa------- 6 to 7pm
Fri 17--------------Bamboo Restaurant----------- 6:30 to 9:30pm

Welcome aboard,

Dave

I rented from the place in industrial area...
I'll have to wait till daylight to dig through my records--or I won't see daylight! The guitar I got worked, and at the time I was thrilled to get it (35 or 40 bucks for a week--reasonable I reckon) but it was nominal. Transport and rental have been discussed here several times, so I think you can check the archives here in "Taropatch".
Konabob will remember the rental place I bet!
But e-mail me if you need store name before I check in here.

While I took my Goodall to Maui for workshop, I sweated the transport to and from, plus the climate changes...
I used the CLAM (your case goes inside this box) and it made it fine, but next trip, I will take a LESS PRECIOUS instrument and go for carry on...but beware of risks of getting "called" on guitar carry ons--having to gate check is rare, but can happen depending on gate agents and other factors!

Next trip, I figure my Washburn is better than a rental, and worth a moderate risk...

The Waikoloa Slack Key Festival will be held on September 4th! I would call that a "must see".
Ledward Ka'apana, Jeff Peterson, George Kuo, John Keawe, Sonny Lim, Dennis Kamakahi,
Don Kaulia will all be there. I will definitely be there with my slack key bass.

Don Kaulia and I will be playing at the Kona Brew Pub on Sept 12th. from 5 to 8 pm.

Mele Kai music and SoundWave both do rentals here in Kona. Carl, you can give me a call
when you are in town 322-4714. I will let you know if I hear of any other events. Chris Yeaton
and John Keawe presided over a nice series of concerts this week.

Gordon! Looking forward to seeing you in January!
Keep us posted on your plans...

It was Soundwave where I rented last Fall...generally a good place, but rentals everywhere are limited to very basic functionality.
I still like the idea of a guitar in every port--must be getting older, my priorities have changed!

KonaBob,
Some confusion - My latest surfing for the Waikoloa Slack Festival yields Sept 4 at some sites and Sept 5 at others. http://www.hiltonwaikoloavillage.com/events/index.asp shows Sept 5.
I'll be in the area both days, so it doesn't matter. I assume I'll find out for sure when I get there.

Well, I just wrote to Milton Lau - I will post when I get an answer from him. I called the Hilton and they say Sunday,
but Don (he is playing in it) told me Saturday... Stay tuned.

Many thanks to everyone who responded. I feel much better prepared now. My wife and I are divers and we'll be bringing SCUBA gear plus underwater camera equipment so one less piece of bulky luggage will be a big help. I'll plan to check out Mele Kai and Soundwave when we arrive.

I'm sorry to say (really, really sorry) that we won't be in Kona until the end of September so won't be able to catch the Waikoloa Festival. We did get to see Dennis and David Kamakahi when they came through northern California earlier this year, great fun.

Konabob, I will give you a call when we arrive to see if anything new is happening, thanks for the generous offer.

Aloha... carl
