I met Richard at the first Aloha Music Camp (2001) before Auntie Nona Beamer honored him with the gift of his Hawaiian name — Kaulele (soaring; over and above the ordinary). I still vividly recall hearing him play Keola Beamer's Winter Tide and how impressed I was that he learned it by listening to a recording. It's been three years since I've seen or heard Richard play and it is with great pleasure that I post about the release of his first CD.
Kaiao `Ana Ma Kalani is comprised of 11 nahenahe tracks. Through slack key classics by Keola Beamer, John Keawe, Raymond Kane, Sonny Chillingworth, and Led Ka`apana, Richard pays homage to the masters who inspire and influence his music. In addition, the CD includes two original pieces titled Kaiao `Ana Ma Kalani and Bugsy’s Slack Key. The CD closes with an instrumental arrangement of the Hawaiian favorite Ku`u Home `O Kahalu`u.
