Another thought... In warmups, and always...remember to BREATHE. Sometimes I practice something simple ( a roll, easy song, or just a strum) while Just Breathing long, slow and deeply!
And when I forget, my wife says, "You aren't gonna play for anybody with THAT expression on your face, are ya?"

POPS-- I've learned through painful experience that carpal tunnel doesn't exactly begin at the wrist -- you have to line up your muscles/bpnes properly all the way from the pecs.shoulder (Damn those nuns were right about posture) -- try the "classical" position, with a relaxed by straight back, with the bottom of your back supported -- it sure helped me --and playing a little less at each stretch (no more 3 hours straight) can help -- |

Raymond,
Thanks for the tip I'll try classical position with a good straight-back chair. You're right about the shoulder, too. Mine's pretty painful lately. Next week I'm seeing a specialist and I've got a fair list of questions to ask. Thanks, again for the advice!

Hi kids - Guess I'll jump in now. and it's my right shoulder muscle that's knotted and sore... But 2 things - ice after exercise - helps my Trigger ring finger (burt - note). And you should stretch and warm up the opposite way from the way you'll be mainly using the muscles so it would seem not starting w/ scales would be a good idea. |

Pops, Don't know where your specialists is going to lead you -- but there are approaches to these issues which are very successfull and don't require surgery. I know from personal experience. Email me at my link if you want to pursue this. If not, no problem.
Nancy -- My problem with using hot water to "warm up" is that it works to soften the nails. Since I don't like pics, and my nails are not very hard to begin with, well, point made. |

Nancy, Actually, I generally keep my nails in good playable condition by carefully grooming them. Even with soft nail it works fine for me -- I just wouldn't do something that might jeopardise their status -- and want to make sure others took that into consideration when deciding if they want to use a warm wate bath to "warm up." |
