Hello all, The #8 cut on Ray Kane's cd,Punahele,is a lovely song called morning dew. I have been trying to learn this song and have nearly worn out the cd. I believe it is played in taro patch tuned down to "F" but I am unable to figure out all the notes and positions. Does anyone know if tab exist for this song and if so, how I might aquire it? Any help would be welcome. Mahalo, Sulle

Sulle,
Sorry, no tab solutions here.
I suspect this isn't news to you either, but there is software, even gadgets, you can buy that will take a piece of a track and play it much more slowly without changing the pitch. It helps a lot in transcribing a song, or so I've heard.
I got one version of the software shortly before someone gave me the tab for a piece that I was obsessing over, so I haven't really used it. The version I got is called SlowBlast from http://www.worldwidewoodshed.com/Default.htm and a year or so ago it was one of the best, especially for the price. Relative quality and price may have changed since then.
Good luck to you.

I use a digital machine by Sabine, couple of years old, so newer models are probably better, buy for $49 -- It will take in 20 sec. off a cd or other digital source and play back at full, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 sppeds and do a fairly good job of keeping pitch. When you shut it off, it keeps what you recorded. Newer Sabines have better features for similar cost. Raymond san Jose, CA

Sulle,
Uncle Ray plays Morning Dew on his video Raymond Kane: Learn to Play Ki ho`alu. I do not recall how much of the song he plays, but I can check when I'm home. On this video, Uncle Ray plays through a series of songs giving the viewer a great opportunity to watch and learn. Not much instruction per se, but nevertheless invaluable to watch Uncle Ray's picking and fretting hands. A little bit of story telling too. Very informal video. Even includes Uncle Ray playing right through a couple of mistakes.
You can get the video by contacting Uncle Ray and Auntie Elodia by mail or phone.

I know that Mark Hanson has tabbed this song and taught it in his workshops. I do not know if he has published it in a book. If you go to his site 'accentonmusic.com' you can check. You may also be able to write him as ask for the tab for a small nominal fee.

On the topic of transcription software, I highly recommend Transcribe, at http://www.seventhstring.demon.co.uk/xscribe. Not only does it allow you to slow down a song, it also does spectral analysis of selected segments, allowing you to have the computer analyze a segment of the song to help you determine what notes are being played. This is a very powerful feature that I haven't seen in any other transcription software. It's not perfect, but it makes things a lot easier. There are lots of other features as well so take a look (I don't work for the company...just a satisfied customer.)

Hanson has Ray's version tabbed out but it's not for sale due to copyright reasons.

Hey Sulle -
Sweet tune.
Grab me some afternoon at the Aloha Camp and I'll show it to ya.
A couple of other campers probably know it, too.
Regardless, I second Andy's advice: get the video. It's wonderful.
Cheers,
Mark

Jeezus friggin gawd.....
Jerry, Ray plays it in open g, tuned down an entire step. low g will be c etc.
the entire song is built around the c chord. I'm referring to open g positions....so a 'c' chord is all six strings barred at the fifth fret.......anyway
the main melody is played on the high d or c if youve tuned down,
open five seven nine ten......then barre the c at the 5th .
try it play around with it. youll hear the melody and know what comes next. As always players like Ray Kane are playing the melody on the top 2 strings, its what he does with the other 4 that you have to make up......and thats where the magic comes in.
Peace to you my friend
Mike
Andy please dont kick me off this site for that. I didnt put out any tabulature.....sometimes, you like something and just need a point in the right direction :) |

Since the original post was almost 4 months ago, I wonder how Sulle made out. Did Mark show it to you in Puna?quote: ...sometimes, you like something and just need a point in the right direction :)

Hi Mike and Andy Yes, Mark did show me "morning dew" at the Aloha camp as did Dusty and a couple of other people. After camp Lawrence was able to provide some tab for the version he and Cynthia do. There is really a lot of great support in this group and I am very grateful. Mahalo nui loa, Jerry |

Aloha Patrick It is great to hear from you again and mahalo for the help. When you have the time I will be looking forward to getting together. Good luck on your tour. I don't know how you find the time with a real job and all but it must be fun to play with some of the greats. Jerry |

Wishing you guys a great tour. Maybe you can post what it's like from the other side of the guitar (performer instead of listener). Aloha! |
