Yesterday I took the plunge bought an 8 string lap top steel and am taking the first lesson today.

I see a few tabs avaiable on line, and would appreciate any suggestions on books and how too's to get started with.

Been trying to play slack key and haven't given up on it, but I think I can make some good music on a steel that will work with my friends in the So Calif Slack Key Society.

Well as long as you don't stray too far away from Slack-key, (and the SDSKS)I guess it will be alright. Ha!
Knowing you, you will probably excel in that too.

Congratulations on the new adventure with the steel guitar! I enjoy my steel guitar and dobro, but it's much more demanding than I originally thought so I don't play much.
What kind of tuning does an 8-string use?

To get started, if you have never done steel, try to get a video
for basics, Jerry Byrd has one, Cindy Cashdollar, Bob Brozman has a Hawaiian one. They all give advise on bar technique etc. Then just get some instruction material and go for it :)

I'd recommend this one for some really good Hawaiian tunes.

Bruce Clarke has 'the ultimate steel guitar practice kit' ,

two CD's one with music and one with charts, and two kinds of charts, a lead sheet for the band, and a chart of tab for steel. This is an excellent package - I have it and am slowly going thru the tunes. The backing tracks are live! - no BIAB here. Excellent.

Also, his restoration CD's of Andy Iona, Sol Hoopii, Dick McIntire and others are amazing listening if you want to hear how Hawaiian steel can sound - highly recommended for your collection. I have about 15 of them now.
