Can anybody tell me if Holei was recorded by Hui Ohana, and if so which LP is it on? Or is it the version Dennis does on "All Hawai`i Stand Together" ? Don't see it on any of their CD's.
thanks, Ross

Aloha e Ross,
huapala.org notes this for Holei lyrics:
"Source: Cody Pueo Pata CD "E Ho`i Nä Wai" Translated by Pueo Pata - Originally recorded by Hui Ohana with a later version by Dennis Pavao, research by Pueo Pata uncovered these lyrics. This poem refers to the booming and swelling seas of Kalapana. Visit Cody Pueo Pata at: www.ululoa.com for other lyrics from his CD"
I think the song may also sometimes be known as "Kalapana" or "`O Kalapana".
Hope this helps.
aloha, Sarah |

If I remember correctly,
This last June, at George's Workshop, Ledward told us that he wrote the basic word's down from some "grafitti" that was written on one of the cliffs off the beach there in Kalapana.
He said that he did not know who had scrawled the poem on the cliff, but he and Hui O'hana fleshed it out and put it to music, and Dennis sang it first.
I did not find it on any of my eight Hui Ohana CD's or on the two Dennis Pavao CDs that I have. Maybe I will check Cynthia's Vinyl collection out in the Garage sometime, she has a few that have not been re-issued yet.

Got the following info from a friend:
Not recorded by Hui `Ohana (according to Led, because Dennis didn't like the song). But it's on the debut vinyl from the group "Na Leo Kane O Punahele" -- Led, Alika Odom and Bernard Kalua -- who went on to be known as Led Kaapana & I Kona. |

Aloha, Lawrence
I'm sure it was the group called, "Ohana Serenaders" that recorded the song even before Ikona. They were from kalapana, there were 4 members in the band, 2 of them are Led's, sisters, rhoda is one not sure of the other sister, and there bass player is my good friend, kalani kekona, I can't remember the other persons name.
I think they recorded back in the late 70's, early 80's. I remember my friend kalani telling me he was coming out with an album with a group called, ohana serenaders, and that he wrote a song called, "Haleakala" that he sings on that album. I remember seeing and hearing the album, the songs that took of on that album was, Haleakala, and Holei.
Aunty Marie can you check and see what happen to there recordings. ( album?) Ohana Serenaders.

Re: Ohana Serenaders Sorry to say, but none of their recordings made it past vinyl/cassette format.

Yes, the above stuff jives with what I remember. Led did indicate that Hui Ohana did not record it first, although he did not say why. I got the impression that Dennis P. recorded it first, but wether it was with H.O. was not clear. He did not mention his sisters in this regard, but that may have just slipped his mind.
Sure, see what Led says about it to flesh out the history!

Aloha Ross:
The version of Holei that I have (and love) is on Dennis Pavao's "All Hawaii Stands Together" cd (track #11). I don't know who officially gets credit for writing/composing it, but it's such a beautifully arranged mele with Dennis singing it so wonderfully.

The whole "Holei" story...straight from Led...
Mama Tina had a painting of Kalapana in their house, and below it was a poem about Kalapana (written by someone with last name "Kay" -- who received full credit for the lyrics).
Led liked the poem, composed a melody for it -- and added some text. Took it to Hui `Ohana for recording, but no one wanted it add it to the album at that time. Hui `Ohana never recorded the song.
So when Led joined with Alika Odom and Bernard Kalua as "Na Leo Kane O Punahele", they were the first to record the song -- and went on to be known as "Led Kaapana & I Kona" on their later albums.
Dennis Pavao recorded the song on his album, "All Hawai`i Stand Together"...no one has recorded it since then. |

Mahalo nui everybody! Wow, Taropatch at work!
Yeah, I've heard Dennis's version as well as pata's, both great.
Kevin, about Ohana Serenaders:
Could these be the album titles?
Kawena I Ka Hookumu Hou Ku Like Ma Kou I Ho'okahi
don't know, maybe these are song titles???
Anyways, Sibyl's teacher has choreographed Holei and they've started to dance it lately, so I wanted to hear earlier versions to practice-up.
Thanks everybody! Ross |
