So let's start getting hyped for Feb '06 Camp! Who's seen whales recently? Surely with all you folks living in Hawai'i and others travelling there, there must be some sightings around the Islands. And then there are lots along the coast: Washington, Oregon, California, and Bing down in Baja - should be seeing plenty there. Can you guys back east see any through the snow? Anyway, I had to get away from shakes and mad guitars..... auntie

Generally the only whales we get in Seattle's Elliot Bay are those pesky Orcas trying to sell some BC Bud they claim to have smuggled over the border. Don't trust 'em! It's ditch weed. |
Aloha a hui hou, Chris P.

Aloha from the Mendocino Coast Auntie Nancy,
The Gray whales are definitely back, doing their migration south along the California coastline. My wife and I have been seeing them now for the last three weeks . They are difficult to miss when we are observing from the Mendocino Headlands. Spouts, tail flukes , backs and mutliple pods, despite the recent inclement weather they are a sign to us that spring is on its way. One of these days I'm gonna pack my guitar and play some whale inspired ki ho alu on the cliffs of this stunning part of California coastline. We feel so fortunate to live here !

Here on the Right Coast, it has been a tough month for whales. There was a mass self-beaching of Pilot Whales (and nobody could get them to stop), and a couple of Fin Whales were beached already dead. In yet another case, one whale (don't remember which kind) was found to have a kind of rabies and died, and nobody can figure out how it contracted it.
I know you wanted happy news, Nancy, but the North Atlantic is not often a happy place. In this deep freeze (-5 this morning), stormy, windy weather, nobody goes out on the water to see (or fish) anything.
I am sure that, in the summer, we will catch a few sightings of Humpies and Minkes.

Auntie Nancy,
The whales are just now starting to appear in Baja. In the next few months we will see them every day when we're surfing. As the kids would say "it's way cool" And as for happy and un-happy guitar's. Keola told us that if one of his guitars isn't behaving he stands it in the corner and won't take it on tour. |

"I don't believe in beating my instruments, but guitars that have been bad are not allowed out on tour. Especially if they are unremorseful! They must stay at home in their quiet place and think about what they've done." -KB

Aloha all, Mike - I wanna hear that song you write about the whales - that would be way cool. Hi Reid, we always feel badly when the sea mammals beach themselves, but it has to be nature's way... Because Manhattan Beach is deep in Santa Monica Bay, we seldom see whales. Yesterday the surf was gigantic and the dolphins were surfing the waves - what a sight!! As a little aside, when I was growing up further up the bay, I never saw dolphins or whales, or any other mammals. An organization called "Heal the Bay" was founded over 30 yrs ago and has made a profound impact. There are now large numbers of pelicans and dolphins - more songs?? so it shows that acting locally without "the gov't doing something" can have a very happy ending. As for naughty guitars, I had heard the Keola story before. That's why I wanted a Patrick cut-out - to come home and ENcourage my guitar..... How about the whales in Hawai'i?? auntie |

From the front page of today's Honolulu Advertiser -- this one was jumping in the waters off Sunset Beach (O`ahu) yesterday: http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/dailypix/2005/Jan/26/homepage_b.jpg
Here on Kaua`i, we're seeing plenny whales on the east side, and a few up here on the north side. They come in close to Princeville bluffs (shopping for a timeshare?? ) -- clearly visible without binoculars. Amazing... |

Wow Auntie!! Way cool! Thanks for posting the link to the picture!! For any of you who ever get to La Paz, Baja Sur, Mexico; there are also several whale and orca pods who as far as I know, don't migrate. The orcas seem very friendly - come right up to the boat, big smiles.. big teeth (all the better to eat you with, little red riding hood) But we've gotten in the water with what I think are pilot whales and been as close as about 15 feet when they come up to have a look at us. The only time I've been to Ft Bragg CA, I couldn't see the water, but that was in summer with the fog. Maybe it's time to go holo holo up the coast! Hope I can save enough money to go to camp next Feb. How can you concentrate on learning beautiful music if a mama is right in the bay birthing?? And does anyone see whales at odd times of the year? Like they don't migrate? I've seen them close in at Malaaia in May, but imagine the baby just came late. Gotta get back to practice. I don't think the guitar is misbehaving.... I think player isn't practicing enough..... aloha all - auntie |

Mahalo Kimo! You live out that way? I will be staying with friend who lives on Kahala past DH for a couple days before AMC... no whales then. There's been so much rain that I haven't been to the beach much in the last month, but there were greys in very close scraping the barnacles off their skin according to the article in the paper. These things don't happen every day so it's big excitement when they do. are you a diver? fisherman? mahalo!! auntie |
