Just for the record:

As of this morning -- St Paddy's day -- I learned that Edirol has pushed back the ship date all the way to "June or July" '05.

I believe the term for this kind of product is "vaporware," no?

Da bastids.

Aloha,
Just thought I'd mention; for those of you with Mac's and a USB-capable Sony MD's(NetMD),
there is some shareware which allows you to edit track names and other housekeeping chores on your Mac, though it won't upload files at all.
This guy spent his spare time decoding Sony's firmware to get that far, but I don't think it's progressed from there.
Sony just won't make their stuff Mac compatible, so this is as good as it gets for now.

It's called Xmd, and you can download it here:

iPod owners may soon have something celebrate; rumors have it that Apple will soon remove the recording quality limitations that have prevented the iPod from being a viable recording device. The hardware in existing iPods is capable of recording CD-quality sound but Apple has limited it through software to voice-only quality, presumably as part of its initial agreement with record labels to allow it to sell music through the iTunes Music Store. After a conversation last month with Apple CEO Steve Jobs, however, former MTV-VJ and current podcasting evangelist Adam Curry guaranteed that high-quality recording would be coming. With the upcoming release of iTunes 4.9 with podcasting support in the next few weeks, the recording support may not be too far off either.

FWIW, I just got an email from BSW USA (http://www.bswusa.com) saying that they have the R-1 in stock.

Aloha Craig,

We just picked-up an iRiver ifp-899 for Sibyl to record her hula classes, and store & listen to her hula playlists.
BestBuy at list price :(

Thanks for all the prior info.

This thing is great! But man, you need good eyes to use it; the display text is pretty tiny.

Also, since it's so feature-rich, the layers of controls are a bit daunting, but then so are the MiniDiscs.

I like how it lets you set a portion of a track for repeated playback; pretty handy.

Just a note; The mac OS X software that comes with it allows drag-and-drop of files straight from iTunes or the desktop, so it's a snap to load it with mp3 files, all neatly organized in folders on the iRiver. By the way, it won't recognize AIFF files, so you gotta convert first.
It handles OGG, MP3, WSM, ASF audio file formats.

Craig, how do you display the recording level anyway? can't find that setting anywhere?

Ross

You're welcome! Glad you're enjoying it.

Do you mean the recording level while you're recording? Unfortunately you can't do that...it's the biggest missing feature of the iRiver.

thanks Craig,

yeah, I meant the level whilst recording. I guess I gotta just trust the ALC.

I suppose we ought to start an iRiver Topic, yeah?

Back on the Edirol R1 topic, a few people have reported on them in other guitar forums and they seem quite pleased.
