GRAMMY AWARDS HAVE RESIDUAL EFFECTS ON HAWAI'I'S "SLACK KEY GUITAR VOLUME 2" POPULARITY HITS #1 AND #2 ON TWO BILLBOARD CHARTS
Grammy Award winning album, "Slack Key Guitar Volume 2," hits #1 on Billboard's World Music Chart, beating out national bestsellers like Gipsy Kings and the soundtrack from the blockbuster movie "Hotel Rwanda." The album, by Palm Records, also claimed the #2 spot on Billboard's New Age Music Chart. (Both charts attached) After 15-plus hard fought years of lobbying by the State of Hawai'i and its music industry, the "Best Hawaiian Music Album" category was finally honored for the first time, at the Grammy Awards this year.
Since taking the Grammy Award on February 13th, 2005, the album and Hawaiian music in general have received international attention, including coverage on Entertainment Tonight, National Public Radio, and feature stories in LA Times, Chicago Sun, Miami Herald and many other big city newspapers.
Hawaiian music sales have also increased tremendously. "Slack Key Guitar Volume 2" is flying off the shelves in cities far from the islands, like Philadelphia, New York, Boston, New Jersey and Memphis. Palm Records' "Slack Key Guitar Volume 2" is also the #1 seller at most Borders and Tower Record stores in Hawai'i. Continued publicity has led crowds of people into stores for not only the Award winner, but other Hawaiian and slack key guitar albums.
The winning album is a 14-track collection of newly recorded slack key performances by ten of the most gifted players in the genre. It was recorded on the Big Island in the heart of Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) country - the home of Palm Records and Grammy recipient Producer, Charles Michael Brotman. The tranquil, acoustic slack key sound is synonymous with the magic of the islands. Congratulations again to "Slack Key Guitar Volume 2" for helping to open the eyes of the world to the music and culture of Hawai'i!

Howzit Slack Key Ohana, I spent a brief 'talk story' time with Pops Charles Brotman earlier this week...funny, we were talking 'bout his success and later after by coincidence I went to Border's Music and found that most of the Slack Key CD's were out at Kailua-Kona's store. Most of Brotman's CDs were gone. My own CD's were gone. While in Hilo the other day, their Border's Slack Key CDs were almost gone...my was gone too. Amazing. My Producer Richard Harrison called to say that he restocked all of the Borders stores and our other Internet Online carrier CDBaby.com has sales orders in the mainland and from Japan. I told Pops Charles that he and his sister Jody did a fantastic job with the artists' and the project proved that we slack key artists don't need words to make good music. The members of the Grammy's proved it...all of us in the Slack Key World can thank Charles and Jody for a wonderful product to open doors for us all. And too the artist. These guys are amazing and good fun buggahs. Just listen to the album and you'll feel good...all over again and again.
I'm just stoked. I guess by now everybody is going to do a Slack Key Album...can you just imagine the nominations for next year?
Bye...keep the Slack Key Music to heart my ohana...we are the keepers.
Aloha, Braddah Don Kauli'a Allll---Right! |

Thanks for the news Bruddah Don, Perhaps a compilation/anthology album is the best choice to get the big award because it spreads the popularity of many artists at once, plus the spinoff interest in the style of music itself. Maika'i no! Jesse Tinsley |
