This song I have in Haw.slack key guitar- by Reri Tava - yes its old, her`s my problem, it calls for, to bar the 5th, play a down strum,& then play a g bass 5th fret & 10th fret d string together!!! further along, still, with a bar on, slide down the d string & play the 5th & 10 together again, the 7-9 7-7 7-10 is not too bad to play, the rest of the song is quite easy, my hands are quite big, am I missing something here?? Aloha e Chip,
I don't know the song, but I sat down and tried barring at the 5th and reaching my pinkie up to fret the 10th on the first string. So as far as your question about reach goes, I can do it, and I don't have big hands. (I did look at Reri's tab, but I found it really hard to follow, so I just tried the reach you described.) And for someone like Uncle Ray, I'm sure it was *easy*. I found that my barre "leaked" a bit, that is, it's hard to hold it all down firmly, but if you know in advance you're going to need the 5th or 6th string in that barre, I found it was helpful to just pay attention to the contact made by the first pad of my index finger on those bass strings while I was going for the 10th fret on the 1st string.
So, I think you can do it. If not right away, just keep at it, and the practice stretching will eventually yield results. I remember when I could not fret the 2nd string 1st fret (C) and reach the 1st string 4th fret (F#) with my pinkie, but I kept at it, just doing as best as I could, and after time, I could do it. Now it's second nature.
Hang in there! :-)

Thanks Sarah,I`ll keep at it, like you say, the more you practice, it should get easier, did you try slideine to the 10th, 1st string, & holding the 5th bar as well ?? Thanks again |

No, Chip, I didn't try sliding :-) That's for the advanced class *ha ha!*
Seriously, though, I can see from the tab what you're shooting for. What I might do in your place is forget about the slide for a while, just try to hit a clean 10th fret. Alternatively, I would work on sneaking in only a little slide from the 9th to the 10th, and when that got better, lengthen the slide another fret, i.e. 8th to 10th. Etc. (This is based on my experience that a long slide is much harder than a short slide.)

Thanks again Sarah, I`ve noticed the same move as above in, Mark Hansons, Hula Blues, bar 37, only two tones shorter, so I`ll work at that & keep stretching, these old hands., & will follow as you say above aloha chip |
