This weekend I was invited to a wienie roast at a neighbor's house. They have a nice firepit away from the house, so it's dark with lots of stars.

After we ate and the kids (and many adults) were making s'mores, the hostess "casually" mentioned that I was learning slack key. I was instantly beseiged by the others begging me to play. I fell back on the mantra that I've heard so many of my slack key brothers and sisters say "but...I'm not good enough!"

No matter. I was sent packing down the trail to my house to fetch my guitar. Back up to the group, settled in next to the fire, and started off in Taropatch with 'Kani Ki Ho'alu' (to warm up and quiet the jitters), and then on for another 40 minutes or so. Between each song I would tell them what I knew of the history of the song, who taught me, little bits of 'olelo, and so on. Near the end I changed to Keola's C (thank Akua for backlit tuners!) for a final couple of songs.

The more I played, the more comfortable I became. It was really special playing under the stars by the flickering campfire. And, even though I certaintly heard a lot of mistakes, they didn't seem to notice, and were very complimentary.

I did learn a few things:
If you are used to watching the 'dots' on your fretboard to help with finger placement, the 'flickering campfire' makes playing really interesting!
And, when you get to a really tricky part and lean forward for a little more light and concentration, that's the exact moment the wind shifts and you get a faceful of smoke.

Way to go, Puna!
For some reason, slack key sounds best around a fire at night.
