I have been playing Slack Key for about a year on my vintage Martin D-28. I am progressing to more advanced tunes such as Young Street Blues, Hula Blues and Radio Hula. The D-28 sounds great, of course, but I am looking for a second guitar so that I can have one guitar permanently tuned to Taro Patch, and the other in standard tuning (EADGBE low to high). At this point I am thinking I would tune the D-28 standard, and look for another guitar for Taro Patch.
Does anyone have a recommendation for brands of acoustic guitars that sound best for Slack Key? I am looking in the $1000-$1500 price range. Maybe my D-28 is best for Slack Key and I should use standard tuning for the other guitar...? Any other thoughts?

Aloha Joe, go to the gear thread. Several others have asked the same question recently and there is some very thoughtful feedback there. Have fun!! n |

If you're in that price range, there are a lot of great guitars for slack key, both new and used. Most players use some kind of Martin-style dreadnought. Other choices are parlors or jumbos. But since you can spend a significant amount of money, my vote is for something in solid koa or koa/spruce top, perhaps a Tacoma or Taylor? I think koa gives you some extra mojo. Ah, the mind reels.
