I've just been sitting around listening to Pahinui family members today.
Cyril Pahinui: "Po Mahina"
Martin Pahinui: "Ho'olohe" and an earlier album "Martin Pahinui"
Bla Pahunui: "Guava Soul" and "Windward Heart"

Although they're not all slack key, there is slack key present on all the albums. They are each a credit to Gabby's skill and work ethic in music. Cyril is the classical slack key player of the three, Martin has the gentle and soulful falsetto singer and Bla has an edgy, jazzy, bluesy sound that makes you think differently about music.
I recommend them all. Does anyone recommend any others by the Pahinui clan?

The Gabby Band recordings from the Big Island with Ry Cooder, Joe Gang, et al.

Also Cyril's Ka Ho`olina Mau is my favorite of his work.

If you don't already have it, try to get the Gabby backyard / Pahinui Bros video - I think I saw it on DVD now.

Thanks, Peter, for the discography. I want to hear it all, but it'll take me a few years to do it on my budget. Chunk, I love the Big Island sessions with Gabby and the whole gang. What energy they had and there was always innovation in the music.

Jesse,

Re the Big Island recordings - without name dropping (maybe some):
Cyril Pahinui was at my house for a couple of days last year and I played that album for him. He actually hadn't heard it in some time. Anyway, as we listened to it, he told a different story about each song, how they recorded it, the interaction among the players, etc. He had a lot of good stuff about Ry Cooder and Gabby "cuttin heads" on steel guitar. Anyway, it was a special moment that I wish I had recorded.
