I'm just learning to play slack key but it's difficult b/c i have no one to teach me. Not really places in Northern California to learn. Anyone know of any good DVDs/Videos or books or sites online? Thanks!

Where in Northern Cal? We have a pretty active scene, including Patrick Landeza's Hawaiian Music Institute, here in the SF Bay Area.

Yeah bl0ops, where are you? I know California is a huge state but at least your state gets a ton of Hawaiian music. And you've got lots of players around too.

You are absolutely encircled with great Slack Key Players including Mr Fran Guidry who gave you a response. Patrick Landeza teaches a Beginning Slack Key Class on Wednesday nights

Go to www.patricklandeza.com and contact him for time and place. You will meet a number of other players close to you as well.

Also look in the Kanikapala Forum for gatherings in your area.

To answer your original question, the number one recommendation for a first book is "Guitar Playing Hawaiian Style" by Ozzie Kotani. Read about it here: http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14

Both the Patrick Landeza DVD http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=991
and the Keoki Kahumoku DVD http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=992

are recommended as well.

You might want to check out the open mic at Espresso Garden on 1st Wed -- a place to meet other local talent.
I live near Valley Fair and am happy to help beginners

Aloha mai e bl0ops,

Are you already a guitar player, or are you starting guitar at the same time as slack key?
Tonya, just starting out, asked some similar questions and got a lot of responses you may find of interest. Here's the page I'm thinking of:
