aloha e kaua,

i earned the hardest hundred bucks i've ever made. i was hired to play at a wedding - the second one i've done, but the first one in which was to do the pre-ceremony, the ceremony, and the post ceremony cocktail hour (not the dinner). i got in way over my head.

- i didn't think about sound early enough. the wedding i had done before was small and indoors; this was > 200 people and outdoors. the hotel would have supplied a practice amp.

- i brought in a friend early on, and brought in another friend later. the three of us had been working on getting some kind of a sound together, so luckily this wasn't that hard to do.

- i lived on the good graces of the couple; they could have been hard nosed. i'm grateful for their flexibility (and they loved the music).

- one of the three of us suggested a dress rehersal, so we did a gig-for-food at a new L&L in point loma. it was a terrible venue; no space at all, but the owner, from manoa, is very cool. we were terrible, and were able to fix the problems in time for the wedding.

- we nailed the music that was important (pshew!)

there is something very beautiful about this kind of method of playing (i think andy does this with his brother). i get to do some slack key instrumentals, sometimes with bass and uke backing me and sometimes not. but the three of us playing together balances out the music. and, working on harmony is like taking drugs. when we got a three part harmony going on Koke`e, it was heaven.

music is wonderful.

aloha,
keith

You know, Keith, from your topic heading, I first thought that your own first wedding had problems. I am very relieved that it was about a gig. No joke.

aloha no,

terry, the other two were gerry rahill and jack knight. gerry is one of the most organized people i know, which helped a lot in getting our song list sorted out to the level of who sings what part. jack has performed for some time and so had the equipment and the knowledge.

hi reid, my first wedding did have problems! my second one went a lot smoother. =)

aloha,
keith

Congrats Keith! Way to go. Weddings are a lot of fun and a great place to share your music. Thanks for sharing the experience. Guess I've been lazy, too busy, or both to post about mine.

My brother played 2 gigs with me last year to fill out the sound, cover any of my mistakes and give me a boost of confidence. He has since retired or is on hiatus. Well, he only briefly came out by playing Pua Hone with me at Terry's house.

FYI, I've been performing with dl584 and having a blast playing with such a great musician. Making our duo official, I've set up a website at www.papalua.com which is still under construction. This summer, we've played a wedding reception among other events and are looking forward to a 3+ hour wedding coming up in August.

I also tested myself last month by playing a wedding solo. I played the cocktail hour which I was not too worried about. But, with a week's notice the bride asked me to perform "In Dis World" for the ceremony. That was some pressure (that I put on myself) but I got through it okay. Thankfully, the bride and groom were very happy with the music and my presence. Glad to know that I can pull it off if needed but I honestly find the dynamic of playing with another person to be a lot more fun. Either way, it is an honor to be a part of a couple's special day and to add to the atmosphere or mood of the celebration.

What song did you play for the ceremony?

Andy

So Keith,

What was your play list? Was it ALL Hawaiian music?

It is my impression that weddings usually want a mixture
of music along with some particular favorites like a Barry
Manilow song or something by Yanni. Did you escape such
demands?

Did anyone walk up and ask you to play "Danny Boy"?!

(at least that is one that Ozzie does!)

the playlist! before the ceremony, i alternated instrumentals with vocals: hula medley, pu`uanahulu, radio hula, ku`u lei awapuhi, lahainaluna, e ho`i e ka pili, kaulana na pua, radio hula (vocal), isa lei, lei nani.

in the ceremony: coming down the aisle: pua hone, promises, wahine `ilikea. heading away: ke`ala's mele.

cocktail hour: puamana, island style, waikapu, my yellow ginger lei, wai ulu, hanalei moon, e ku`u morning dew, kuhio bay, ka pua `ui, dream slack key, `ulupalakua, koke`e, `ulili e, pahoa liko ka lehua, `opihi moemoe, brown eyed girl (that caused spontaneous dancing =), tropical hawaiian day.

aloha,
keith

Way to go Keith! That's a great set list. The hundred bucks is incidental (maybe?), the experience ... priceless.

hi lawrence! no one made any requests! i wonder why? when the father was stressing about not having the check at the rehersal, i joked saying that it was okay, if he didn't pay us, then we'd do some disco, and the bride said "oh! i'd LOVE that!" and started doing a boogie step. hum.

i like CSNY and clapton...

andy, i remember your version of Pua Hone; it brought me running you guys sounded so great. I tried doing it in D while tuned in taropatch, but i never got it as smooth as i had wished. i tried playinig around with george and daniel's version, but i would have needed to retune to get it into a good range for me. so i did it in drop C tuning with a capo on the second fret. it's a sweet way to play it.

raymond, thanks for the welcome observation. when i did my e street cafe gig the next day, it was really easy. gerry joined me for the second hour, which brougnt the manager out to listen; that was flattering.

aloha,
keith

Well I'm late chipping in, but Well Done Keith.
Nice set list...wish my repertoire was that far along...
And it is a huge help to have friends helping for both playing and logistics...
A wedding alone can be a little nerve racking!
Right on bradah.
