I will be in Seattle for 3.5 days for a meeting and company research visit. Unfortunately, not really enough free time to hook up for any kanikapilas. That is why I didn't contact anyone specifically. Too bad because there are many of you that I would like to meet in person.

Any suggestions for things to do? I do have most of Saturday free and plan to do some sightseeing with my wife. Aloha!

Andy

Things we enjoyed:

The UBC museum has one of the best collections of Northwest Coast Native Art. Seattle museum has has an excellent collection.

Victoria, on Vancouver Island, can be a nice one day -- excellent mueum, Busch Gardens are incredible, "high tea" at the Palace is a fun experience, nice shops asnd eateries

Don't forget to stop at Pike's Market in Seattle -

If you prefer, you can take a car trip into the mts. Inn at Snoqualamie (sp?) Falls is really nice, with a rtomatic setting. "Northern Exposure" fans can see the town used for the outdoor shots - I won't go there just for that, but if you're in the neighborhood.

Up here many folks say the best thing about Aeattle is that it is only 3.5 hours from Alaska. Don't know if it works the other way around.
It's a nice town, fairly easy to get around, Dusty Strings is a really cool guitar shop.

Thanks, should also mention that we do not plan to rent a car. Time is short so I think we'll have plenty to do in town.

I think the Seattle Museum is definitely worth an hour or two.
The "underground tour" was funky but fun
-- all walking or bus distance from Pike's market.

Seattle restaurants do an incredible job at Asian fusion.
One place in downtown we really liked a few years ago (went back) was called the Dahlia, or was it the Blue Dahlia -- I'll see if I can look up old photo with name

You've already gotten some great suggestions. Now, let me throw in some caveats:

Without a car and without a lot of time, your options are more limited.

As per JWN, if you're out near the airport, first get to the downtown area. That's where most the fun stuff is.

Victoria (as per RJS) is wonderful and accessible from downtown (via the Victoria Ferry)...but that's a REALLY long day.

Dusty Strings (as per Karl) is an amazing guitar/'uke/dulcimer/fiddle/other stringed things shop (warning: leave your credit cards at home!). The shop is in Fremont (itself worth a visit), which is about a half hour bus ride from downtown. If in the Fremont/Ballard area, you can also tour the Ballard Locks/Ship Canal.

Flight Museum, MOHAI, WP Zoo - each about a 20 min bus ride from downtown (in different directions).

Buses are free in the downtown core, and $1.25 (or so) to most other areas. Call the Metro line 206-553-3000 - tell them where you are and where you want to go, and they'll give you all the info (bus stops, bus numbers, transfers, etc) you need to make the trip.

EMP (again, per JWN) - haven't been, but heard raves about it. In the Seattle Center, near downtown core. Lots of other stuff to do in the center, also. SAM (Seattle Art Museum) is in downtown, and is definately worth a peek (and is across the street from the 'Lusty Lady', speaking of 'peeks').

The market - ok, it's pushed on all the tourists, but it's pretty cool. Us locals really do shop there for produce/flowers/etc (passing over all the 'Sleepless in Seattle' t-shirts and other tacky bits). Walking the waterfront can be fun, also.

Visitors from 'middle America' (non-coasts) always go for the ferry rides. Maybe less interesting to a Jersey boy, but a possibility. BTW, the Bainbridge Winery is open but has moved and is only accessible with a car. Same for Blodel Reserve.

Underground Tour is fun. Waterfall Park is cool (ok, cold on a wet day). And, for the truely dorkey (but fun) experience, ride "The Duck".

I might be bribed to play chauffeur, at least part of the time <EG>. I'll email you with contact info. Another music-y thing to do: Seattle Song Circle meets every Sunday evening, 7:30-11 (come & go anywhere in that time-frame)---you could go with me if you wanna.

EMP is definitely a great place, especially for a musician. The only downside might be it costs about $18 to get in and to do it justice takes at least 3 if not 4 hours.

Enjoy your visit Andy.

Eh Andy!

Welcome to the Pacific Northwest! You should get a hold of Gregg (Retro), since he and his wife, Lori are local folks from up there and work in the heart of downtown Seattle. He gave some great suggestions of some things to do to my friend who is going up there next week. Maybe you and Gregg can hook up with each other!

I also have to agree with Larry about EMP. There's not another place like it. I had loads of fun there and kept very entertained for hours. Ya gotta check out the guitar museum. It's unbelievable! Pike Place Market is always great to go through on a Saturday too. Have fun, and bring your rain gear (or umbrella!).

Dear jwn,
Got to add that I haven't been back to Seattle for over 8 years - the Dahlia might have changed since then -- when I went there it was getting great culinary (not movie) reviews and I thought worthwhile

BTW, I looked at your foto - getting a bit brown around the gills?

Seattle `Ukulele Players Association has its monthly gathering this Sunday (Oct. 2) from about 1:00 pm on in Ballard (you can bus there from downtown) - info is at seattleukulele.org.

Will you be based downtown?

If you get a chance to listen to the radio between Noon-2 pm, I'll be co-hosting "Hawai`i Radio Connection" on Saturday 10/1, on KBCS 91.3FM; we're expecting to have Jake Shimabukuro in for a live interview (streams on-line at kbcs.fm).

John, as a guy who often cleans, cooks and eats squid, I'll bet any money that was not sand. When you clean 'em properly, the tiny little beaks in the tentacle suckers come off in your hand and feel just like sand. Da Buggahs nevah wen' clean um. I wouldn't eat at a place that didn't do it. I can think of a few other interesting things they probably left in the calamari, too.

That place notwithstanding, Seattle has a major rep for good food and good wine. Should be no problem at all to get something outstanding.

Andy, Could Sarah and I carry your bags for the trip? Since you now know all about taxes and shelters, we could be written off as expenses. You would probably make money on the deal.

Hi everyone,

This is the first time, I've checked in to Taropatch since arriving in Seattle. Thanks for the info. I'm leaving Sunday morning so no ukulele get together for me. We've got Saturday free to tour around. We checked out the Space Needle yesterday and bought up a bunch of Seattle Sonics stuff for a good friend who is a huge fan. Thank goodness the weather was good and we could see Mt. Ranier. Looks like the clouds and rain are here now. Too bad but I am in meetings all day anyway.

I'm not checking email often. Wish I had more time here; but it's a short trip, mostly work, and then back to work in NJ.
