I noticed that my Hog 30 (made by Pignose!) was rattling on some frequencies. A friend of mine was noticing the same thing. I began to suspect that the metal grille that covers the speaker was the culprit. While I was in Cerritos, at the Ukulele Festival, I used a bungee cord to hold a plastic water bottle against the grille, and that knocked out the rattling. Well, I got home to Kona (a grand old place that's always fair to see...) and removed the grille from my amp. I went to the hardware store and purchased some 1/2" hardware cloth and a tiny can of black Rustolium. Traced a circle on the hardware cloth that is the diameter of the original grille. Cut out the circle with wire cutters, and painted it black. Replaced the metal grille with the hardware cloth... no rattling! I suspect that the hardware cloth - with much less mass and much less surface area - is much more transparent to the bass frequencies. All's well.
Added 11/06: I found a website which lists the following modification to the Hog 30. The writer says it really sweetens the tone of this amplifier. It look cheap and easy!
1. Take the back off 2. Insert about a square foot of 3/8" thick fibrous carpet felt underlay (not the rubber stuff!). I tried it first with a thick towel. It was OK, but it was better with the felt underlay. 3. Put the back back.
