I'll be on O'ahu in a few weeks for a conference and I'm looking for a new tenor. Does anyone have any recommendations as to good music stores, etc. where I can check them out? Thanks!

Pops, Try a visit to the KoAloha Factory. It is west and north of Aloha tower near the UH campus and COSTCO. It can be hard to find and is in the "industrial area". But the tour is well worth it. Paul, Alan, or Alvin "Papa KoAloha" Okami run the tours. They have a nice little foyer where they display some of their gear. They charge for large group tours. It is best to call them for directions. Here is their web site: http://www.koalohaukulele.com/KoAloha_FactoryTour.htm
Paul Okami "KoAloha" usually chimes in on this forum for ukulele questions.
There is a ukulele shop in the Aloha Tower marketplace.
The Kamaka factory no longer sells at their factory.
The best guitar and ukulele shop is in the Ward Shopping Center, on the second deck. They carry Taylor guitars and a wide variety of ukuleles. |

Also Kelii Ukulele in Aiea is behind a pawn shop (interesting factory tour). They sell mostly to Japan and local High Schools but you can probably hand pick a tenor from the finish shop. It is just off of H1 past the PearlRidge shopping center. |

check out the classifieds in the honolulu advertiser and the star bulletin (these papers cost about $1 each) if you look around you can find racks that have free papers island previews, pennysaver, and [/i]buy and sell[/i]) if you have online access while youre here check out islandpreview.com...that way you dont have to wait for the paper to be put on the rack, the classifieds are posted right away online |

Aloha, all,
Thanks again for your helpful hints and suggestions. I just returned from Oahu where I followed up on many of your leads. They were most helpful.
I did stumble upon a store I never heard of, Bob?s ?Ukuleles, at the Waikiki Marriott Resort and Spa at the Diamond Head (ewa) end of Waikiki. He had a really nice selection from good beginner models up to the high end. I also met a really nice gentleman, James Kojiro, ?The ?Ukulele Hobbyist,? who had a great booth set-up Thursday morning at the Sheraton Princess. He had vintage Martins and Kamaka sopranos and concerts along with some really cool other stuff. Very reasonably priced too. He seems like a great guy to do business with.
After making a lot of phone calls, visiting a lot of stores and playing a lot of ?ukuleles I finally found what I was looking for at the Hawaiian ?Ukulele Store at the Aloha Tower. Cal Nelson is the proprietor and a heck of a player. He spent a lot of time with me and I ended up purchasing from him. Great guy with a great shop.
Thanks again to all who helped point the way.

Fran,
After playing a lot of 'ukuleles I ended up buying a Kamaka tenor that's really sweet. I got the pick of the litter, for sure. Thanks again for your kind suggestions.
