Taylor guitar's quarterly "Wood & Steel" newsletter has a review on Jim "Kimo" West's new CD 'Slack Key West' and a snippet from two songs on taylorguitars.com

Good sound from Wierd Al's lead guitarist kicking back.

I'm way behind on CD reviews. This one spent quite a while in my car CD player... a good sign.

Based in Los Angeles, Jim "Kimo" West writes and produces music for film and television. As a guitarist for parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic, Jim - I suspect - is an extremely skilled and versatile musician. I mean, he's got to play anything from Michael Jackson's Beat It to Madonna's Like a Virgin to Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, right? Or more accurately Yankovic's equivalents Eat It, Like a Surgeon, and Smells Like Nirvana. In 1985, Jim caught the Hawaiian slack key bug while spending time in Hana, Maui.

"Slack Key West" is Jim's second slack key release and features 11 original instrumentals in addition to Beyond the Reef, Maria Elena, and Lei Aloha. 14 songs, 8 different tunings, Jim demonstrates skill, variety and a truly "nahenahe" touch. Retaining the essence of traditional slack key, Jim plays in a style that is uniquely his own. This album will indeed stand on its own in any "slackers" music collection.

FYI, just got an email from Jim West that his CD has been included in the running for Best Instrumental Album of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. Congrats Jim!

Jim's CD is one of 18 instrumental albums which appear on the list of submissions for consideration this year in that category..

Time again for the annual "how the voting for Na Hoku Hanohano Awards works" lesson.

First, HARA's Selection Committee meets to ensure that all submissions are valid and are in their correct genre and categories. We've had two meetings; third and final one is scheduled for March.

Then the l-o-n-g lists of all valid submissions (in each genre and category) will be sent to all voting members of HARA -- who then choose just 5 submissions in each genre/category to be on the official ballot, and return those lists to HARA for tabulation. This happens in late-March or early-April.

The top 5 vote-getters in each genre/category are the official "2006 Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominees", and those names get announced in the local newspapers.

Then the ballots for the 2006 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards are printed and mailed out to all voting members -- who then select ONE submission in each genre/category. Members then mail those ballots to the accounting firm which audits and tabulates the votes. The winners will be announced at the Awards show on May 31 -- broadcast live on island TV.
