How can a 2006 Grammy go to a 2004 CD? |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

Congratulations to the official winners. But once again, Hawaiian music wins again with more long-awaited recognition. Now let's get the actual award presentation televised and then add Hawaiian entertainers to the broadcast as well... |

Well, one nice thing about this Grammy is that it hopefully will be a boost to attendance at the Slack Key Masters shows at the Ritz Carlton.
The funny thing is that Garrett and Peter (da Ukulele Boyz) have a Grammy now... ... but they have not yet even released their first CD!
Congratulations to all!

Way to go! It has been on continuous loop in my iPod for the last month. I love Cyril's version of Hi'ilawe and Led's Maunaloa Slack Key. |

Aloha Kakou,
Congratulations to all doesn’t seem to be enough...I guess the world is really hearing what many of us have loved for years. This is great for all Hawaiian music, but particularly for the slack key lovers, and players of the world. It truly is great news.

Well said, Ray. It is another victory for slack key and more broadly for all Hawaiian music. It's cool to see our idols, teachers and friends being recognized.
In the case of the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Vol 1, I hope it brings in more people to see the show in Maui. |

Wow.. so very exciting! I've been in love with Hawaiian music since the summer of 2004... when I was at the Santa Cruz wharf... it was Cyril Pahinui, I had never even heard of slack key and I was standing awe-struck at the sound that he was producing. I mean I had heard some Iz and some Reichel that my girlfriend had played, but nothing like what Cyril was playing... I went straight home, ordered one of his CD's, plugged it in and was just amazed. The same day I was invited to join my girlfriend's halau as a musician so I guess it was one of those weird "meant to be's". Scary being a rock guitarist who hadn't played much in the past 11 years and then being told, "We'll be performing in 3 months at our biggest event of the year". So, I was tossed into the Hawaiian music world the hard way... "Uh, what is a Hu'i? What is a Ka'i? What is a Kaholo? sheesh.. I watched Eddie Kamae's documentary The Sons of Hawaii and absolutely loved it... since then I actually took my first Slack Key lesson from Dennis Kamakahi. A great experience! Wow, I rambled.. my apologies for the long winded reply, my basic point is that I am super happy that this music that holds such incredibly talent is gaining some well earned recognition. I can't stand telling my friends and co-workers about all this great music only to have them say, "Who?" Baby steps. |

A little delayed bump to this topic - I did a story on the album & interview with Daniel Ho (with mahalos to Andy & TP) for the March Northwest Hawai`i Times newspaper - which posts online one month after the print edition. You can read it now at: http://www.northwesthawaiitimes.com/greggmar06.htm
