Steve,
I'm not sure many in this forum know how good your wines are and what a special treat it would be just to enjoy one of your bottles. If I lived in Mau'i or Kaua'i you could borrow one of my Taylors.

Steve,
Didn't know you were a wine maker until I read your profile. I still have a few bottles of your wine in our wine rack. It's been a few years since we've been to the PR area, but would always stop at your winery. I would advise anyone with a guitar to take you up on the offer of guitar for wine rental. I like "NO NONSENSE RED" !!

Thank you both for your kind words. Please visit the winery when you are in the area, and bring your guitars!

I decided to rent a guitar from Bounty Music; you can't blame anyone for not wanting a complete stranger to borrow their guitar.

I hate to travel with my Taylor, but this will be the first time I play slack-key on the islands, and I want to play something better than my 60's Silvertone!

I only wish I were able to take ya up on the wine for guitar deal! But traveling with yr Taylor is not all that hard. There are ample posts buried in the archives about how do do it.

The short answer is to pack it up well and put the case inside a well-packed shipping box. Or get one of Brice Lamb's Case Extreme over cases... or use the plastic Taylor case (the plastic absorbs the bumps better that a wooden case) and pack it inside one of those large plastic bags the airlines have for golf bags. Or buy a serious case like a Calton.

I bought my Taylor 414K specifically as a road guitar, and it's flown successfully more times than I can count. After trashing two Taylor plastic case (with no damage to the guitar) I bought a Calton. Last time I flew TSA forgot to put the case in a plastic bag and one of the little metal feet got buggared up, but the guitar's just fine. Taylor's are built tuff!

So, does this dandy advice quality for a bottle?

cheers,

Mark

Mark,

Thanks for the advice. I have taken it on short trips like Las Vegas, but I hate to have to check it in at LAX. I worry about theft as much as damage (not in Hawaii, of course!)

I would definitely trade a Paso Robles Zin for a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir!

Interesting. Is theft still a big issue with all the TSA droids roaming around?? (Don't answer that, it's a joke.)

You should check out the Applegate Valley, where I live. Quite the happenin' little scene starting up here. Wish I had some southen exposure 'stead of my dark forest deer tick and poison oak ranch!

You anywhere near Bob & Janita Baker (Blue Lion)? Old friends, incredible guitars. Janita plays slack key dulcimer, of all things.

I just take my Taylor in its case up to the door of the plane. Then the ramp attendant hand acrries it to the cargo/luggage compartment. That way, when I walk off the plane at the other end, they bring my guitar (in its case) up to the exit ramp. Haven't had a problem yet.

Oh yeah, I just make sure to put extra padding under/around the neck inside the case and slacken the string off a bit to release some of the tension. Most damage (I have read) occurs when the case is dropped flat and the neck snaps against the case support and weakens the neck head at the nut.

Blue Lion in Santa Margarita is only a half-hour drive from Paso Robles. I think I saw them at the Renaissance Faire.

Are they TP'rs? I've had a hard time finding anybody local to play at Luau's for the wine club. There's a Uke shop in Morro Bay, and they gave me the name of a slacker, but he never called back.

It would be great if we could get a kanikapila going on the central coast; it wouldn't lack for wine!

Whenever you are in Las Vegas please give me a call. I live over in Henderson. The phone number is on the website www.ianui.com or www.slacktracks.com or send direct e-mail

I'm having a kanikapila on April 22 and if you are in the area please come. A bunch of Southern California Slack Key Society folks will be here, as well as some special guests.

Aloha Steve -
Sorry to have missed you at Christmas. I read all about warnings and how to pack your guitar last summer when I went to Moloka`i. But I followed someone else's advice, used a soft case and put in the overhead, including going from HNL to Moloka`i. Absolutely no problem and all the flight attendants were wonderful and protective on my behalf. There were other instruments on all flights. May have been tongue in cheek about thievery in Hawai`i, but it's as bad there as anywhere else.
It'd be terrific if you could make it over to Don's in Henderson - I'm driving over if you want to catch a ride from LA.

PS:
Have you found guitars to borrow in the islands? I know a few more on Maui - out in Kihei who might lend.

Since I've nothing useful to add to this thread...I'd just like to say I always make it a point to borrow wine. I like to try to remember to return the bottles though.
