Aloha Folks,
Not sure which "forums" section to put this so we'll try here. One of my favorite things about where I live, Makakilo Hawaii, is the sunrise from my deck. In November, and February for a couple of rare mornings you can actually see the sun rise right up out of Diamond Head. My little experiment was to try and catch this on my wimpy Sony camcorder (in all it's high tech glory, as the trade winds bounce my camera back and forth) to share it with some friends. After doing my best to get the video (some sections makes Diamond Head look like it's melting as the sun comes up!) I thought...hey grab a cup of coffee, and the guitar...lets play a song to go along with the sunrise. The first song that popped into my head was "Le'ahi" which as many of you know is an old name for Diamond Head. So, I put this little video together, and sent it off to my new buddy Don Narup who many of you already know. We met this last Christmas. Don is a really nice guy, very knowledgeable, and loves his slack key! He put it on his website, referenced below. We found out that some folks can hear things OK, some of us (like me and Reid I understand) get some distortion, and digital artifacts bouncing off our ears. I figure some of you engineering types out there may have 2 cents to share about how and why there is no common platform for us simple folks to provide on the internet. Seems like with all the different types of computers, ISP services, browsers etc. etc. you never know what every body will hear! If you get the chance, check it out. The idea was sincere enough, hope it doesn't bend your ears! You can find it on www.ianui.com under the event calendar page, it is the second video there called sunrise from Makakilo. All I know is it sounded better when I played it at the Hyatt yesterday! A hui hou, Ray

Ray, Looks and sound really good to me. You are a lucky man to enjoy a good cup of coffee with that sunrise. |

Ray,
Mahalo. I've been on you deck and what a magnificent view it is. I can smell the Ke Kope and hear you play. Hope all is well with you and yours.

Ray, terrific view and good music. Makes me long for my home in Mililani. No worry, I'll be back again in July or maybe after my trip to the Merrie Monarch next month... |

Ray,
Don sent me the 9mb mp4 via email.
I got it and there is NO real technical problem with it. (It is a wonderful work, BTW).
The problem turned out to be with the lousy speakers in my systems. It was recorded with pretty high volume and it has *lots* of bass content. So, if the volume is turned up using the lousy built-in speakers, they are overdriven at the low end and the sound breaks up. When I listen through good earphones, and set the volume at a reasonable level, everything is fine (although it is still bassy).
I think this just shows both that we can't rely on the chintzy sound devices that come with lots of computers and, if a recordist wants to get through these lousy devices to reach a larger audience, the sound has to be shaped (and perhaps compromised) - in this case, taking some bass out. What happened to me originally is akin to the old infrasonic woofer pumping problem with warped vinyl LPs. But, again, the recording is not the problem, the playback device is.
So, it is not the "platform". Don't worry, be happy.
Aloha,
Reid

I'm not a big fan of computers or the internet, but Taropatach.net and this video really allow me to appreciate the technology.
Well done Ray. The sound coming through my small Altec speakers was just fine. Mahalo nui.
Next time I'm on island I'll have to look for those really fast birds.

I am becoming ever more humble as I venture into these forums and discover the talent of the TP members-- especially now that I am trying to record. Your guitar playing and singing is fantastic! The sunrise video with your music was a very good idea. I am also making good progress. I have narrowed my technique problems down to only three areas...the begining, the middle, and the end :) Bob |
