Heard the Cazimeros latest CD I guess, the melody "Maori Brown eyes", wasn't that very very nice.
*By the way that song was created on slack key back in the late 1930's early 1940's. Again one of the many early slack key pieces I learned.
For our sake (slack key lovers), can you imagine how, not only awsome, but "incredulously awsome" it would have been if the 1st guitar was down atleast two decibels so we could hear more slack key in the background...
I was in the army in Korea with their older their brother William and my wife and their sister are childhood friends from grade school to (Rah, Rah, Rah) Roosevelt High school where the pretty girls are.
Back to slack key, Maori Brown eyes slack key was created with its own simple but different and very pleasant "Baroque" type tuning with a universe of possibilities. Today it is almost forgotten.
If you ain't old enough, (didn't come ot of the 1940's early 1950's) you may not have heard it played and if you are a slack key student (player, enthusiast with one to 50 years experience), you will be surprised how very simple it is and what opporutnities it will create for everyone learning it. It is a slightly different tuning that is yet pitched to perform many G tuning melodies with a nice touch and a minor ring to it and could almost be comparable to G tuning.
*History will be made on taro patch *Free instructions on "Maori brown eyes" slack key. Us kanaka's are tired of giving things away for "one dollar and hawaiian love" so the saying goes. But since you're not Missionaries I am going to put myself out on the limb (pokey keawe tree)and say to whom ever is interested I will donate to all slack key players on this planet (only) this tuning and enough instructions to get you started playing it, two weeks from now when I return from the islands (sometime after the 27th. give me the weekend to rest and I'll post it on the 1st of May 2006.
My gift to you with One favor, since many of today's younger and even older slack key players have beat me to the punch by naming some public domain melodies and tunings as theirs, and since maybe a quarter of a handful of people rmember this piece, please make reference to this tuning as "Kaimikaua's" Thank you. I could have said it was mine but I'm not i'm just reviving it.
You will love this tuning especially for beginning slack keyers.
So Keith, Dusty, Mika ela, Ralph, Nancy, Peter and all of you out there drum it up for us and again thanks for the warm welcome you guys.
I Will post this tuning and slack key instructions (simple instructions for everyone, I mean everyone no matter what level of experience), after 8 A.M. May 1, 2006

Mahalo nui, Uncle!! I hope you have an awesome trip to Honolulu. I hope you are able to meet Peter Medeiros, and also Johnna Thomas who published Tales from the Night Rainbow for us. SCSKS would like to have you give us a workshop when you get settled and have time. We are really looking forward to learning your original Maori Brown Eyes. We worked on it at the kanikapila last weekend at Terry's under Mika ele's mentoring. Aloha nui to you and auntie Iolana!! n |

Uncle Mahi, I was teaching a waltz version that I learned from Mika'ele McClellan to Nancy and the other SCSKSrs. The version I have is in its "own" tuning, as I know (what do I know) of only one other song in the same tuning. It is in, technically, a G6 Mauna Loa tuning, but it is labeled as the Maori Brown Eyes tuning. I have added some personal ornamentaion to the intro and outro but it is an uncluttered arrangement. I am very moved by this song, the story behind the song, and much prefer the waltz version to the newer 4/4 time versions on recent albums. It is the essence of nahenahe and I look forward to learning from you since I am just a haole kama'aina from Kahalu'u. Malama Na Koa, Mike |

Any chord notes and lyrics to Maori Brown Eyes? I just started steel (8) string, like you, I love old mele. I grew up in Kalihi at 12 with uncles back yard jams. |

I have a few recordings of this song, but can anyone suggest a recording where all the song is sung, not just the chorus? Jesse Tinsley |

Sonny Chillingworth on the "Sonny Solo" CD from Dancing Cat. He plays it with a 4/4 time and a sauntering horse backbeat. Gives it a nice cowboy feel. |

Uncle, I'm on my way back to Oahu and will be there the month of May. Plan to contact my slack key teacher (Harry Koizumi, former apprentice to Raymond Kane). It's been too long since I picked up my guitar, so I look forward to your posting which I will use to start playing again! Mahalo! Barry Crotty |
