Hi,

I just learned my first songs in F Wahine and like the tuning alot. Anyone have any tablature songs in F Wahine I could get my hands on?

Aloha, Stan!

F-Wahine is probably my favorite tuning, although I only do a few songs in it (too hard to get to quickly in performance). I have tablature in F-Wahine that I wrote for Ray Kane's tune "Pua Sadinia". According to the liner notes on his Dancing Cat CD "Punahele", he played it in Taro Patch "tuned down to F". Not knowing what that meant for a long time (CFCFAC - same intervals as DGDGBD) I figured it out in F-Wahine and play pretty much the same notes he did, just not the same fingerings. I just don't have it computerized in any way; it's hand-written on paper only, so if you don't mind giving me your home address, I'll gladly mail you a copy. My hand-writing is neat, and I made some "performance notes" as well.

Stan,

Some of the songs on Keola Beamer's online course are in F-Wahine. Yes, it's a great tuning. I agree with hooaloha Pila, it's a tough one to get in and out of on stage. I usually keep a second guitar in that tuning.

There are three songs in F wahine tuning in the book Keola Beamer & I did: "Learn to Play Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar."

Ua Like No a Like
Ki Ho`alu Mischief
Tiare Tahiti

Both "Ki Ho`alu Mischief" and "Tiare Tahiti" are duets - Keola's parts are in F wahine and mine in Taro Patch. His parts stand on their own very nicely as solo arrangements.

I know Keola also has some F wahine arrangements on his Homespun video -- some one else will have to fill in the blanks here.

It's a great tuning, have fun with it!

cheers,

Mark

Aloha,
My $00.02: go find yourself a place of inspiration, forget about tabs, and write yourself a song. It's a great way to learn a new tuning!

That particular piece of advice is worth a lot more than two cents! Never underestimate the educational power of messing around with your guitar.

This thread reminded me that I'd never got around to sending Andy chord charts for F Wahine -- which I did this AM. I also sent charts for Drop C ("Leonard's C") and G 6th. I'm sure he'll have 'em posted soon.

cheers,

Mark

No kidding. And that was never more apparent than when Pat Cockett had a session at the Feb. AMC in which he showed us how to find all kinds of amazing chords/sounds, first in Taro Patch and then in each of the tunings when only one string was tuned differently from Open G(Double Slack, then that interesting D tuning, etc.) I was blown away, and because Sarah was in Keola's class, I asked him if he would come over and do a repeat; which he graciously did on our platform - a solo tutorial. Mind blowing again. Sarah is beginning to sound like Taj Mahal :-) and, as Pat said, like Ozzie, who also knows about all the "hidden" treasures in each tuning he uses.

The Homespun video is a good one, and has Sanoe, Kalena Kai, and one other i can barely play but cannot remember. I believe Makana's version of Ku'u Lei Awapuhi is also in F wahine and i worked out a rough tab of that. the Beamer Homespun video has accompanying tab.

OK. Here's one for the F-wahine `ophiles. I initially found some of the fingerings difficult, so I learned the songs in Taro Patch F. I'm happy with the sound, but what am I missing by doing this? I'm not wedded to Taro Patch F, although my guitar likes it; just trying to understand the tradeoff.

Terry,
F Taro Patch is (CFCFAC)
F Wahine is (CFCGCE)

As you can see, the bottom three strings are the same for both. But in F Wahine the top three strings are higher. This balances the neck tension out on the guitar and you don't have to use a heavier gauge string to keep away from fret buzz. But more importantly, the parallel thirds/sixths, scales, and turnarounds have a much different feel. AND the sympathetic vibrations from the non-played strings gives a whole new feel/tone to the same song.

F Wahine has some very similar fingerings to Bb Wahine and C Wahine so it is not that difficult to transpose from one to the other (or so Mark Nelson and Keola Beamer say).

E nana, e ho'olohe. E pa'a ka waha, e hana ka lima.

I agree with the responders that mentioned Keola. His DVD has seveal F wahine songs and he does say it is one of his favorites tunings. I have learned most of them and I like it a lot too. C Wahine (Keola's C)is very good tuning too.

As if F wahine needs more support, I have to throw mine in. While I had been loving slack key for a long time it was a tune in F wahine that made me want to play slack key. It may also be responsible for my first gig. I was playing the very tune (Ku`u Lei Awapuhi) when the five-year-old daughter of some friends of ours asked if I would play it at her wedding. I'll have a lot of time to practice.

A five year old thinking about a wedding!! What are we teaching these kids??
