The show ran l-o-n-g (as usual) but the energy in the room was high for all of us for almost the entire night. Wonderful to see so many talented musicians winning their first-time Hoku awards, but equally delightful to see veterans like my pal Ledward Kaapana getting one, too.
Biggest surprise of the night for my table -- not because it wasn't warranted, but because none of us had advance notice -- was when my dear friend Jerry Santos was announced as the recipient of the 2006 Moe Keale "Aloha is..." Award. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee! And as if that wasn't exciting enough, one of my other guests won a Bill Murata Scholarship -- Kamuela Kimokeo of the group, Pilioha (www.pilioha.com).
Post-show party in the lounge was Na Palapalai, Aaron Sala...and anyone who wanted to join them. It was still going strong when we headed back to our room at 11:45.
Yep...it was quite a night!

Keoki has a neat story about that hat. He was in a second hand shop on the big island with a friend and found this old hat. He felt a strange kinship with the hat but thought it a bit gaudy. His friend convinced him to buy it and wear it. A few weeks later he visited is sick grandmother in the hospital and was wearing the hat. She asked him where he got it -- he told her. She then told him it was her hat that she had given to the shop to sell. That is why he keep wearing the hat. She passed away a short while later. |

First -- mea culpa -- forgot to mention that I had a quick chat with Morgan and Jeff (and did a quick soundbite promo for their KAPU-LP station), as well as old friend Bill Rodman (who is now a volunteer DJ for the same station...small world!).
Mika`ele -- mahalo nui loa for sharing that wonderful hat story (gives me chicken skin...). Keoki was showing "before" and "after" surgical photos of his sliced fingers (ewwwwwwwww!), whose scars have healed beautifully. He's got some motion in them, but no feeling yet (nerve damage takes longer to "revive"). And Herb Jr told me Keoki had actually been playing with Uncle George just last week. Whew!
Fran -- Pilioha wants to ensure that their debut recording is as close to perfect as possible, so they're still doing some work on it. Hope to release late-summer or early-fall.
Heads up Led fans! Milton Lau whispered that Led's new CD should be released in about 2 weeks...loaded with vocals, too. Wu-huuuuuu! |

Mike: That shop is his cousin's shop. Tutu Wahine had donated a lot of stuff for her to open the shop. |

I'm happy to add Keoki is healing fast and actually taught Slack Key Guitar and ukulele on the last 2 Saturday's at Donkey Mill, Big Island. He's playing an electric guitar given to him by a friend to ease into it. |
