Actually I have a very short one. Since I'm in the Netherlands and pretty much isolated from anything remotely connected to slack key (not entirely true, since historically hawaiian music has been pretty (kind of) big in the Netherlands, but not so much the slack key style) my introduction and knowlegde of the style came from cds and podcasts as the hawaiian music guide (which I really, really love).

My favorite slack key memory was when I began to discover patterns like vamps and 6th positions from Ozzies book and began to hear them in the music on the cds. It was a kind of "oh, now I get it" kind of feeling similar to figuring out the 12bar blues for the first time :)

Obviously, this is a really small thing, but it has brought slack key closer to me. The more I listen, the more I love this music!

My favorite slack key memory was driving down the hill to the Mauian to attend George's camp this year. "We are home," I said to Connie. She knew exactly what I meant.. Texas Jim

Back in '03, last minute, I flew fro L.A. to Kona for the 1st annual slack key institute/kani in Kamuela. 1st time in HI. Checked into the local motel/b&b, went to the room door looked to my left and Led K. was there at the adjacent door. I kinda chuckled and said, "cool, free lessons". Later that night after the show I was chillin and fell asleep watchin TV in the room. Sometime later, someone shakes me awake. I look up, its Led. He says,"You ready for beers? grab you guitar bra." Led, Ozzie, and Jake all there. Awesome.

My favorite slack key memory is when i attended a concert for George Winston in Villa Montalvo. His piano works are what attracted me at first, and although i was aware that he was involved in some type of obscure guitar playing, i never really took an interest in it. Then, when i went to his concert, he played his last few songs with his guitar. His slack key was so beautiful, it brought me to tears. Slack Key is just a wonderful, beautiful art form, and, in my opinion, a diamond in the rough. After the concert i immediately wanted to learn guitar, and so i did. Slack Key is one of my favorite types of music, and i love it tremendously.

Wow!

I just returned from a short vacation finding the DVD on my doorstep. Eagerly I ripped the envelope and the wrapper off and put it in my DVD player. Oh man! I already loved listening to Keola Beamer, but I enjoy watching and imitating him even more. I love that guy!

Thanks a lot Andyfor getting this DVD out to me. I really, really like it!

best!

Roel

...Actually, I have many wonderful slack key stories, but one of most memorable happened just recently in July of this year. I was working for a home respiratory company, and always on the phone with various patients, mostly the elderly.
Well anyways, there was this one lady, from Scotland who was a regular patient of ours. On this particular day, I spoke to her for the first time to take one of her orders. As we spoke I could tell she was a very strong and vibrant person. The strength of her voice, and energy came through quite clearly. I was was impressed and told her so. As time went by I spoke to her more frequently and got to know her better, until one day I told her I was so impressed by her that I would like to stop by her place just to meet & chat with her.
I suggested I stop on Sunday, July 9th, but she said no because it was going to her birthday party. I asked her how old she was going to be, and she said 95! Wow!!! I then told her if I could stop by Saturday July 8th, and as a treat, I would play her a couple of slack key tunes. She had never heard of slack key before, (I guess its not a big draw in the land of bagpipes & hagus) and thought it was a nice gesture.
I finally met her, not knowing she was someone of note. (apartently she had married into vast wealth and lived in high security seclusiion). Long story short, I passed through various security points, close circuit t.v.'s, etc...before finally being escorted to her room. Walking through long halls filled with art pieces, tapestries, statues, etc... (I kept thinking "what-the-F, who is this person).
I was lead into her room where she sat upright on a bed with her little white poodle, (why does it seem that all old ladies/people have these stupid little hair bag dogs????). And there she was, dressed quite well, bedecked with lots of jewelry. She was what I imagined her to be, full of life, alert, and the brightness in the eyes that held the vigor I heard on the phone. "Hello, I'm Anastasia" she said, "pleased to meet you" I introduced myself and said hello to her sister who was in the room also. (she was 93!!)
I gave her a Hawaiian welcome, kiss on the cheek, and a shell lei.
We chatted for a long time, and then I set up my amp & guitar.
I played about 4 songs and with each song she was thrilled to hear the melodies. She had never heard the music, and I could see she felt quite mellow with the music.
When done, we chatted some more, she thanked me for the music and told me how it really made her day to hear something like that. She offered me to come back, and she would tell me stories of her life.(She grew up during the bombing of London, and even worked for Scotland yard). I said okay and left, feeling quite good that I brightened someone's life.
A week later, just after the 4th of July, I called her back to see how she was doing. A caregiver answered the phone and informed that Anatasia had passed away on the 6th. I was so bummed & saddened. She was so nice.
That whole day was a major suck-sandwich. I was sad to see her go, but happy knowing she really enjoyed my company and music. Anyways, kind of a happy-sad-happy story, but that's my story.
