Uncle George Na'ope, renowned kumu hula who began his studies at the age of three with his great-grandmother Mary Malia-Pukaokalani, is one of the eleven recipients of the 2006 NEA National Heritage Fellowships, an award of $20,000 and the nation's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. Uncle George has already been recognized as a "Living Golden Treasure" by the Hawai'i State Legislature and the Governor.
