Thanks to the many TP'ers who have posted tips, my recent trip to Honolulu was fantastic music fest! Only had 7 days (and quite a few family obligations to cramp my style), but I still managed to catch a lot . . .
Started with Pilioha at the Aku Bone our first night (every Wednesday 8-10 pm). What a great bunch of guys who create a very nice sound. Aku Bone is a wonderful venue full of aloha (and yummy food). A major regret is that we were unable to go back our last night in town to catch Holunape there (Tuesdays 7:30-9:30).
As is usual for us we enjoyed an evening with Olomana (Jerry Santos) at the Hilton . . . where he has now had a steady Friday-Saturday-night gig (8-midnight)for 16 years. My wife's been following Jerry Santos for over 30 years, so we always manage to catch him every trip.
I finally made it to Honey's in Kaneohe to see Eddie Kamae for his regular Sunday afternoon session (3:30-7). While initially disappointed that EK's regular musicians weren't there that day, excitement prevailed when Dennis & David Kamakahi walked in off the golf course and ended up on stage. What a great unexpected bonus!
It ended up being a sort of "Hui Aloha Day," because we then raced back to Waikiki in time to catch Martin Pahinui, George Kuo and Aaron Mahi for their regular Sunday evening performance at the Mariott (6-9 pm).
I even joined the ukulele jam session behind the Waikiki police station (across from the Hyatt; Thursdays and Sundays 8-10). Good fun . . . and actually my first time singing in Hawaiian in Hawaii . . . and playing for impromptu hula dancers.
We also caught Maunalua at Duke's (now Fridays from 4-6) . . . and I finally got to meet Ray Sowders briefly before one of his regular sunset performances at the Hyatt (along with regular full sets at the Brew Moon). Another regret for the trip is that my schedule never allowed me to catch any of his numerous gigs . . . but I'll address that shortcoming on the next trip!
Thanks to a couple of extended sessions at the always-wonderful Borders at Ward Center, I'm now home enjoying over a dozen new CD's that mysteriously found their way into my suitcase . . .
I can't imagine a place more saturated with live Hawaiian music performances than Waikiki/Honolulu/Oahu. With good planning . . . and the help of several great local entertainment calendars (Honolulu Weekly in particular), along with numerous tidbits from TP.net . . . a guy can end up just plain giddy!
Thanks again to all of you who have shared ideas and tips.

Aloha e Don, Sounds so good.... I've only been back from Hawai'i nei for some two weeks, and I'm so home sick (although two nights of Led did ease the pain). Eh, Andy, dis makes me tink: why not we have one sticky in "Performances" to list regular gigs on the islands?????? I think we have some peoples who might like that kine info'mation. I can't wait til next time I get to Oahu for a week! Ho, brah. But really, where kapuna play on Molokai (the Hotel, ??). What's Uncle Raymond's address? How far ahead do you need one reservation to see Cindy in Hanapepe?? What are the first dozen cultural events in Hana?? Who's playing under the Banyon Tree?? And why?? We really could use some organizashums here! All in favor?-- Sticky for island gigs/venues?? Hope this helps.

Nice Idea Bwop. My hands up for a yes vote
Sounds like a wonderful trip Don.
I'm always just blown away at the the quality and quantity of music that can be seen and heard in just a few days on Oahu
It would be cool to organize a group of TP'rs to make the rounds like that together someday. |
