You might think that there are a lot of radio stations in Hawaii that play traditional Hawaiian music. You would be wrong. 90% of the stations here are owned by 3 large California based companies that save a few bucks by shoving mainland music into the islands. Here on the Big Island, there are 2 stations that claim to be playing Hawaiian, but it is really "Jawaiian" - basically reggae or hiphop using ukuleles. I had given up completely on radio, when a couple of days ago I flipped it down to AM. (I haven't listened to AM radio since 1972) and discovered that amid the talk radio and religious programming, there is a station that plays the real thing! It broadcasts out of Oahu, and low and behold... they stream!
Go to: http://am940hawaii.com/ and click on the live broadcast link. If you love traditional Hawaiian, you will not be disappointed!

Looks good but I can't seem to get the thing working - I took off the pop up blockers, but wen the separate box pops up, all I get is a black screen with a little "send this to a friend" box in it.

Try the controls in the box, Raymond. It worked for us (using Firefox) at 10:00AM EDT (about 4:00AM Honolulu time). The little black screen has nothing in it, really.

Sarah is gonna try and freak out her officemates while she works :-)

Right now, Keali`i is singing.

But, occasionally, the streaming stops or breaks up - probably a network clog problem. Maybe you hit such a break, Raymond.

Thanks for the tip, Konabob.

...Reid

PS. We have my WiFi connected laptop streaming downstairs and Sarah is listening to the cable connected desktop system upstairs while she does her shoulder PT excercises. One funny thing: the upstairs system is about a second or two ahead or behind the laptop (it varies) - out of synch - must be some kind of hub issue that I don't understand.

Still neat, though - Dennis Pavao was on a couple of songs ago. All this 5000 miles away.

I wrote an email to the station manager thanking him. Couldn't hurt.

Yes, I was so thrilled to find this station, I just had to share it with Taro Patch! I am using Safari browser on a Macintosh, and I have a tiny Belkin FM transmitter connected to my computer so I can tune in while I am in my shop making basses. It gets the koa and mango wood inspired...

I am sure that some of these other internet Hawaiian stations have been discussed here before. But here are my other favorites:
http://www.hawaiianrainbow.com/ - Rich Shipley's station from Maui which does not have any advertising.
http://www.kkcr.org/ - Kauai's aloha filled public radio station features Vintage Hawaiian most mornings (Hawaiian Time).
(Our own Auntie Maria does a beautiful show several times a week.)
http://www.hotspotshawaii.com/irhpages/irhlive.html - Listener Sponsored Internet Radio Hawaii from Oahu.
http://www.alohajoe.com/ - Aloha Joe produces a new 2 hour show every Saturday morning. (Originates from California)
http://www.live365.com/stations/arthadley2 - Live 365's Slack Key Paradise. Great slack key. (Don't know where it originates)

Thanks Konabob.

I've added any missing links to the "Radio" section of the Taropatch.net links.

If I may put in a plug for our show out of Seattle, "Hawai`i Radio Connection." It's only two hours a week, but the station that airs it (community radio KBCS-FM 91.3) also streams live at http://kbcs.fm. The show is on every Saturday from Noon-2pm Pacific Time.
We have a rotating `ohana of hosts, and I'm regularly on the first Saturday of each month - though a bunch of us will be on together for a collective party for the Sep. 30 show.

Hi Karl,
When you tune in, just think about sitting on the sea wall in Kona! Better yet, go to my web cams (http://www.konaweb.com/#WEBCAM) while you are listening. And if you make yourself a Mai Tai, turn the thermostat up to 80 and sprinkle sand on the kitchen floor, you will be pretty much back in Hawaii!

Mahalo Konabob for this site! I will share this with our ohana here in Eugene. It's getting wetter and colder here already, so this will be a great escape for us web-footed folks in the Pacific Northwest! - Maggie
