I'm planning on a return visit to Hawaii for fall or winter 2007. I'll be bringing my family with me. I really want to make sure that whatever island(s) we schedule have ample chances to hear (and hopefully join in playing) some music. Anyone have and recommendatons as to where we can maybe get the most value for our vacation?

Thanks!

Although we've found terrific music on every island we've visited, we always head for O`ahu first. Led Kaapana is playing twice a week or more, Mike Ka`awa and gang are at Honey's on Sunday, Herb Ohta, Jr. and David Kamakahi play afternoon shows twice a week, George Kuo, Martin Pahinui, and Aaron Mahi have a show every week, and I'm leaving out literally dozens of terrific artists. And all the shows I mentioned are free. Plus you can take lessons from various artists, and I'll bet you can find someone to play with as well.

We go to vrbo.com (Vacation Rentals By Owner) and look for places in Kailua, on the windward side. It's peaceful, has beautiful beaches, and 25 minutes from Waikiki.

Mahalo, Fran for your suggestions. You'r right about O'ahu, last November I got to have dinner and talk story with Martin, George and Aaron and Melveen Leed. It was a great evening. I also caught up with Herb, Jr. and David, too. I didn't make it to Honey's but is always sounds good to me. Thanks again for your suggestions.

KonaBob:

Where does the Lim Family perform? And Darlene Ahuna? We'd like to see them while we're in Kona the end of this month, but I can't remember which hotels host them...

Aloha, Auntie Maria,

Darlene told us yesterday that she's at the Mauna Kea, and the Lims are at the Hapuna Beach Prince.

On O`ahu we went to Chai's Island Bistro where the Bros. Cazimero play for free. The kau-kau is way onolicious. Those giant tiger prawns are unbelievable. Roland and Robert are very nice and friendly and like to talk story. Also very good music and hula at Tiki's Lounge at what used to be the Aston Waikiki. I know some other chain bought them but cannot remember the name.
George Kahumoku plays on Maui -- he hosts a kani ka pila. No matter where you go there is much wonderful music to be found. Also, don't forget to check Auntie Maria's web site for shows on the islands (and off). Also, it doesn't hurt to find a show that you have to pay for. Island musicians need to make money, too. Many have regular daytime jobs, like George Kuo, who works for the water department, and Ocean Kaowili, who is a fireman. We are going back to Hawai`i in February. Best time for vacation when you are from Cleveland. The best thing to do in Clevelnd in February is to leave it!

Aloha Wanda,

Last November I was on O'ahu and I was lucky enough to visit with many of the great musicians you mentioned, plus some others. It was pretty easy to find music in Honolulu, in general. I'm familiar with George Kahumoku's Tuesday evening gig at the Ritz on Maui and have attended the wonderful Saturday afternoon kani ka pila with Kevin and Sheldon Brown. I haven't been to Kauai or Big Island and I was curious as to what I can catch there in terms of tunes.

Also, do you play? I see you're from Cleveland, too.

Best wishes,

Mark

Aloha Mark. I do not play anything other than the CD player. Now, my husband, Paul, is another story. He plays very good guitar, claw hammer banjo and mountain dulcimer. He has found that dulcimer lends itself very well to ukulele tunes. He is a beginner at slack key. He took lessons this summer at August in Elkins, WV, from Patrick Landeza, who is a very effective teacher and an all-round swell guy. My interest lies in the language, the poetry and the kaona of the mele, as well as hula auana. We attended a hula & language workshop in Twinsburg last March, taught by Puakea Nogelmeier and Keali`i Reichel. If you are in this neck of the woods and would like someone to jam with, let us know. Paul would be happy to have someone who is also interested in Hawaiian music. I can try to sing. I'm getting good at Hi`ilawe; Opae E, Ahi Wela, Wahine Ilekea, Kokee and Henehene Kou Aka.

I just spoke to Darlene, and she advises people to call the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel while they are on vacation. (808) 882-7222

Her schedule varies, but if you can catch her show, you will not be disappointed!

Oh drat -- I wanted to surprise her, but now she knows we're coming! We've been fans of Darlene since before her first CD was released...and we still have videotape of her first (very nervous) mainland performance.

BTW -- I called the Mauna Kea earlier today; they are clue`ole about who is actually performing. Even the concierge could only offer "it's Hawaiian music". Oh really???

Hapuna Beach however was able to tell me exactly which nights the Lim's would be performing (Thu, Fri, Sat) -- so we'll see them on Thu and ask them when Darlene's performing, since Lorna books both hotels.

Well, Maria, I am sorry that I am going to miss you here in Kona! I enjoy your radio show (and the entire station!), and keep hoping you will put up a translator over here. Kona has lost much of it's Hawaiian soul, and the lack of Hawaiian radio stations is a big factor in this situation. I think Darlene would agree!
Aloha,
