I've had mine for a few months now, I'm just starting to get comfortable with the silicone strings. It seems to get close to the upright bass sound, at least on the D and G strings. I've used it out on a few gigs with our band, the Windy City Islanders. I don't trust my sense of intonation if I'm playing a complicated bass part, but for most of our songs it's not too hard to keep in tune. Maybe no one's listening to the bass anyway More info on this bass at http://largesound.com

Hey Craig -

Welcome to the Ashbory club! I've had one for years -- mine's one of the Guild ones, affectionately called the "Gummy Bass."

Have you tried using baby powder on your fretting hand? Really makes a dif with the feel and sliding around. Intonation is a real issue with the fat strings and fretless neck. Lot's of vibrato helps (and chorus, if you wanna cheat.)

I'm not playing much bass these days, but back in the 'way back I'd use the Ashbory mainly for ballads -- where it added a nice round voice to the mix and took the weight off my shoulders for a few minutes. Great sound for Cuban son, too. Like an Ampeg Baby Bass.

BTW: Byron Yasui has been known to play one, or at least a `ukulele that someone modified with Ashbory strings and electronics.

When I asked him about it, he replied with a snort... Not quite sure what that means!
