There's a great little Wahine lesson posted on the Acoustic Guitar website by Keola. Heres the link:
http://www.acousticguitar.com/lessons/Slack_Key/2.shtml
I'm having some difficulty with the melody portion, in measure 5.
There is a hammer-on on the third string, from fret 5 to 8, while you simultaneously have to hold down the 1st and second strings at the fifth fret to play the next few notes.
Even though I have long fingers, this is a real challenge for me...I find that I have to release the note on the 8th fret to play the others, then quickly re-fret. This of course kills the sustain and is not the best way to play this piece.
Any tips or hints from you awesome slackers out there? Mahalo in advance!

Practice, practice.
I should tell you that I am the lowest common guitar denominator. That is, if my very short, weak, stubby, damaged fingers can do it, anybody in the world can do it. I did it. I didn't sound like Keola, but I fingered and picked it as written. This is *definitely* not a brag.
There must be something else wrong. How are you holding the guitar neck? Where is your left thumb - hopefully in the middle or lower half of the neck? You know it is a half barre, right, and you can use only the first joint of your index finger? Is the fretboard fairly parallel to your body? Maybe you are doing something Keola didn't tab?

Reid,
My thumb is right in the middle of the back of the neck. I've found that this position is just better from me, technique wise, and what most teachers recommend....I know a lot of folks do it differently but this works best for me.
When I get home, I'll have to work on the partial barre a bit...Im just not sure if I am using only the first joint to hold down the strings or not, but I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the suggestions!
