I was looking through fretboard mag and there was some mention of a particular luthier liking the "mellow sound" of nickel-wound strings over phosphor bronze sound..Obviously not a universal truth but a preference. Of course this varies with instrument..frequency of string changes, etc., yes? I was hoping you old hands had some opinions? Danny

Danny, Do a search in the archives, OK? We have beaten this one to death and you will find lots. Basically, consensus is PB lights or mediums or coated versions thereof. PB can be as mellow or as bright as you want - Just look at the GHS site, for instance. (I think GHS are basses are too flabby sounding :-) Sarah and I also hate coated strings and dislike mediums - Just wanted to start another fight. :-)

Too many variables for any generalization to work--some of them are in the guitar, some are in your ears, some are in your fingers. All you can do is try 'em out and see how you like 'em.

The coated strings are good if you live close to the ocean, or perhaps in humid environments and leave your guitar out so you are more likely to pick it up and play as you walk through the room. This thread probably belongs down below with equipment. n |

It depends on your body chemistry also. I can kill nickel wound strings in a few minutes, but no problem with PBs. |

I bet the choice can have something to do with if you have strong fingernails or not. Mine are like picks and I avoid bright strings. I do not like twangy and I get a bright enough sound from PB coated. I still get twang in the trebles but I try to control it the best I can with technique. I fight with that more than anything rigth now.

Firstly I would like to thank those of you who chimed in and offered help even though there is--reportedly--answers to my questions already here on the forum..in prepackaged form.. For those who prefer to exert control over the sudden re-eruption of new questions fromnew members , maybe this is a good time to reflect ...why not re-engage new dialogue on old topics...nothing to teach? nothing to learn? don't want newbies bothering your world? I read forums on ocpaddler.com --a site for outrigger canoe paddlers, racers and enthusiasts...and have rarely seen a newcomer not get assistance ..as in direct help or a direct link--with question or problem...it is a small thing,,but as you know..aloha is a subtle but noticeable thing too...Slack key is in no danger of going away any more...but we are part of how it is delivered. |

Danny, Obviously you are referring to me. Really subtle. Thanks for telling me about the fine points of aloha. I didn't know anything about them.
Here is what I wrote to Davey. You might not have read it.
Davey, I understand your feeling of community, and that is mostly why I continue posting. However, there are several folks who really have good opinions - and knowledge - about things that you may find worthwhile, who don't, or rarely, post anymore. They are probably lurking, but they are probably not gonna repeat themselves. On lots of subjects. They are part of the `ohana, too. And, if you go to a camp, or a local kanikapila (especially on the Left Coast), you will probably meet them, and have little or no idea about who they are, what they know, and what they can do. It's a shame to waste a lot of valuable insights and experience, and maybe, if you find something that they said that interests you, you might start a new conversation with one or more of them. I don't think you should think of archived threads as "buttoned up" - they are a helluva wonderful resource; not only conversation and opinion. In fact, some of the posts are absolutely essential for understanding a whole bunch of things, and I have many of them bookmarked. Try dipping in.
And here is what Davey replied:
Point very well taken on the resource angle, Reid. And you are always great about posting links to past threads, which is enormously helpful. You're absolutely right by the way -- wisdom and good advice are never "buttoned up." Just archived. Mahalo, Davey
I guess Davey was wrong, and I was wrong.
I have been making another major mistake which a couple of you newbies have made me aware of and which I thank you all for. Above, I schizophrenically called this a `ohana. In other posts I schizophrenically reminded people that this is the Internet, not real life. Well, it can't be both. And I am sorry that I erroneously conflated the two.
Welcome to the Internet, Danny, because it sure ain't no `ohana no more.

Wow Reid...I don't know what's going on in your life that's motivating this acerbic tone of late, but you're in my prayers. As for the topic at hand, I just did a search of the archives and can't find any threads that compare the different string types. Sure, we've had discussions about a particular string type or brand but if there's a thread that directly addresses the question asked here it would be helpful if someone could post a link to it. Actually, posting a link to previous discussions in general would not only be helpful but also make sure that any additional posts go where they will be most useful (and bring those older discussions back to the foreground). It will also go a long way towards making new members of the site feel welcome. |

gee, if i had told you guys that my feelings were hurt for not being "spoon fed" information,,,would that have been better received? tough thing about making and sustaining relationships without face to face contact is that words that glance off in person can get an interent recipient's BVD's in a wad...sorry for my part in that..but there are quibbles and quarrels in all families..no matter if you qualified for Hawaiian Homelands or not...doesn't make you dysfunctional |
