The Rough Guide to the Music of Hawaii is part of the Rough Guide series of World Music samplers. This CD is a sampler of Hawaiian music.

There are basically three kinds of tunes on the CD: steel guitar and vocals from the 30's, Hawaiian "roots" music from the 70's and modern slack key from the 90's.

For you slack key enthusiasts there are some fairly recent recordings from Dancing Cat: solo slack key by Sonny Chillingworth and Leonard Kwan, and a slack/steel duet by Bob Brozman and Cyril Pahinui. Slack key is also featured on the tracks by Gabby Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, The Sons of Hawaii and Sunday Manoa.

The nice thing about the collection is that it does a good job of covering authentic Hawaiian styles such as steel guitar, slack key and falsetto while it avoids the "tourist" Hawaiian styles (although you can argue the "authenticity" of the steel guitar tunes).

It includes a 16 page booklet with well written and informative liner notes. I've got CDs by many of these artists, but I still enjoy listening to this CD because it is a pleasant, varied, intelligently selected collection of Hawaiian music. It's an easy way to be exposed to a variety of important Hawaiian artists and Hawaiian musical styles. It's a mid-priced CD.

Track List:

1. Gabby Pahinui - Ku'u Pua Lei Mokihana
2. Sonny Chillingworth - Moana Chimes/Pa'ahana
3. Sol Hoopii - I Like You
4. Alfred Apaka - Na Moku Eha

I bought this CD -- hoping to be able to contact the Rough Guide folks and get the CD added to the mele.com inventory. No luck with that plan, but I do enjoy the CD.

Since all of the tracks were taken from prior recordings, I put up a descriptive page for the CD, with hyperlinks to the recordings used.
