This is just a long shot... Here is a photo from my parents' wedding in southern California in 1959. My mother is dancing hula and Uncle Joe Keawe is singing. Does anyone recognize the steel player? or bass player?
I'm just curious. Jesse Tinsley

Hi Jessie, When I dragged this picture into iPhoto, it comes in as a negative. I'm afraid if I print it, it won't look like this. Otherwise, I'll try to find someone who might recognize those folks. nancy |

Jessie, I looked through all the pix in the HSGA's "The Hawaiian Steel Guitar and its Great Hawaiian Musicians", ed. Lorene Ruymar. The closest I could come, and it is a very long shot, is Walter Wailehua. He played with the Bill Lincoln group around that time, and played a Mulit-Kord that looks like the guitar in the pic. No info about his presence in CA. But, as I said, this is very low probability.

Thanks, everyone. I don't have any idea who played steel with Uncle Joe in California, but on his 1977 album David Keli'i was the player. I wondered if it was Keli'i because he moved to California at some point, too, forsaking his regular gig with "Hawai'i Calls". Jesse Tinsley |

Hi, Jessie. I believe that it's Henry Allen, who was working with Martin Denny in California at the time. |

Hey Jack, there is a definite resemblance. I'm going to find more from the wedding and compare them. JT |

Man, talk about age morphing. I agree, it looks like the younger man grown older, but, I looked at the aged pic of Keli`i, and that could have been, too. However, Allen fits the bill.
Anyone want to try to ID me from my younger pix? I was Killer :-)

Eh, Reid! You still got the steel on the back burner? Slipry1 showed me a neat trick with C13: it's the optional tuning for the Bb to either a C or an A as needed---3 tunings for the price of 1! |

Not a Multi-Kord. Either a Gibson console, like Jerry Byrd played, or an Epiphone, like the on LT Zinn used in Hawaii when I was there. |

Steel is not on the back burner. Got a Bel Aire by Jason DuMont with hand wound Stringmaster pickups by Jason Lollar. The first Jason is only 45 mins.driving time from me.It is is in C6. Some people seemed to like it after only being born 1 hour before played. We shall see. (C6 is a genius tuning.) The other guitar in the batch went to Jerry Douglas, but with different pickups(s).
Sorry for the digression, Jesse.

Jack,
Jason DuMont's main page is: http://www.lapking.com/builder.html
And his page on "my" model is: http://www.lapking.com/bel_aire.html
Mine is very like the 8 string shown at top, except mine also has a bridge cover. It is of Korina, a blond mahogany-like wood from Africa. Very stable, and Jason chose perfectly quarter-sawn pieces for it. There are lots of very amazing details that his pix don't show, like individual hand made saddles for each string with adjustment screws, spring loaded screws on each end of the bridge to raise or lower it, Schaller retro tuners, and he hand forms and plates the pickup covers (because commercial outfits couldn't form the shapes well enough for him :-). In short,he is everything you would want a luthier to be: a compulsive, crazoid artist. (He really does paint and other stuff, too.)
