I bought this LP a while back on E-Bay. Nice music...never expected to see Makaha Sons on a slack-key album. Released in 1980.

Who are Da Blahlahs? I could not find anything at Auntie Maria's web site. Here is where you can see a picture of the cover. It is an artists rendering of someone.....who do you think it looks like? I think Led Ka`apana. http://www.hakushouse.com/images/TF99/DSC00971.JPG

Contains: Paani Ilima (Da Blahlas), Sand (Da Blahlas), Black Sand (Na Leo Kani O Punahele), Mauna Loa (Lim Family), Kowali (Hoopii Brothers), Punahele (Da Blahlas), Wai Ulu (Makaha Sons Of Ni'ihau), San Antonio Rose (Hui Ohana), Slack Key #3 (Hui Ohana), Punahoa Special (Lim Family), Wahine Ui (Hoopii Brothers), Whee Ha Swing (Sonny Chillingworth).

"Slack Key Giants" is a _great_ album!

Da Blahlas released a couple of albums -- none of which made it to CD format. Members on their 1976 debut CD were listed as Clayton Kua, Abraham Keala (who went on to be included on Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau), Richard Kaleohano, Ku`ulei Ahuna, and Bernard Kalua (who still performs as guitarist for singers like Marlene Sai, Karen Keawehawai`i, etc.)

You can hear Da Blahlas doing "He Ono" on the compilation CD "Hawaiian Classics" (taken from the vinyl "The Best of Bill Murata: The Producer":

They had two albums that I know of: the first, self-titled (1975), on Poki, and a second, "Ka Lua O K Manawa" (1978) on Pumehana. Both have come up on eBay more than once in the four-years-plus I've been watching Hawaiian LPs there.

The second LP's notes say that they're from the Big Island and consist of Kuulei Ahuna (guitar), Clayton Kua (guitar, bass), Richard Kaleohano (guitar, uke), Randolph Ioane (bass), plus their first bass player Bernard Kalua on some tracks.

"Slack Key Giants" was a bit of a mystery when I first came across it as a cassette--it was clearly a compilation album, but there was no info on the artists or the source albums--so I was happy to find a fresh vinyl copy on eBay not too long ago.

I think I've posted this advice before, but anyone who's looking for un-reissued material such as Auntie Alice or some of Sonny's LPs should create and save a search on "hawaiian" in the Records section of eBay. In among the endless copies of "Mahalo from Elvis" is all kinds of wonderful stuff from the Renaissance-and-earlier period: Sonny, Gabby, Sons of Hawai`i, Hui Aloha, the Kipapa Rush Band, and many others. The guy who runs Hakushouse, for example, does a lot of shopping there, as do some Japanese collectors who often run prices up past my comfort point. Right now there are LPs of "Two Slack Key Guitars" (two copies), Sonny's "Ka Aina O Hawaii," Hawaii Sons #1001, “Charles K.L. Davis At Home” (with Atta and Barney Isaacs), and some 49th State 78s (two of which feature Genoa Keawe and John K. Almeida). Treasures!

So is that Richard Kaleohano the one that Moon Kauakahi's song "Kaleohano" is about? I think that song is so beautiful and has such power... And is Randolph Ioane related to Mickey who wrote "Hawai`i '78"? From what I have read so far, they are all from Keaukaha, it seems.

Thanks for the info Auntie Maria and Russell.

Lucky I found it, yeah? It was still sealed...brand new.

Re: hakushouse.com

His prices are OUTRAGEOUSLY high -- and he is known to illegally burn and sell CDs from those vinyls on his site, if requested. More than one record label is sending their legal teams after him...

I have all of their vinyl albums. The last time I saw Bernie he was playing with Ledward. I'm glad I have all the vinyl I have. Think I have all of Gabby's and one is autographed that I found at Jelly's for only $4 ... what a steal. I have my discography catalogued ... maybe I should post it to see what some of these old albums are worth.

Hey, does anyone know when Olomana might be doing another CD? It's been years since they had anything new out. The last one was Enduring Pride and that's gotta be at least 15 years.

Dear Marguerite:

I do not know of any specific news about Olomana doing more recording as a group. You can check out their web site at: http://www.olomanamusic.com/index.html . I do know that if you e-mail Jerry Santos through the web site, he will respond to you quickly. He is a very nice gentleman, full of aloha. He is very open and giving and freely shares his mana`o. And makes beautiful music, to boot. I love the song "Come to me Gently". When we saw him back in May, he shared his story about how he came to write the song. Chicken skin time. If you are on O`ahu, Jerry and friends play at Chai's Island Bistro...for free! Of course, you do need to bjy a wonderful dinner at Chais. Chai's is the only place I saw that does not have a tip jar for the musicians. Jerry told us that Chai wholeheartedly supports local musicians and compensates them appropriately when they play at his place. Certainly Chai's has always a wonderful line-up.

The music at Chai's can be enjoyed for free -- by sitting on the outside bench, streetside of the restaurant. Lots of locals do it.

And the odds of Olomana doing a new release, are slim. Jerry's somewhat willing, but Wally, Willie & Haunani have jobs and commitments which take them away from music. It's a wonderfully rare Saturday night at the Hilton when all 4 of them are on stage together. Willie performs with Jerry most Friday nights; Wally drifts in now and then; Haunani...well, it's a blessing to catch her performing anywhere, isn't it?

We've been prodding Jerry to do another solo album...hopefully, in my lifetime!

You can hear the music from outside Chai's, but that's not the whole show. Audiences and performers interact, and the response of the listener has a great effect on the musician and the performance. The night we saw Jerry, a lady in the audience had him and Chai's staff upset. We were right at the stage, and don't know what went on behind us, but afterwards, Jerry thanked us for helping to make the evening fun for the band. We did nothing, other than let our enjoyment of the music show. And request some of the Olomana songs we were familiar with. Having been on the other side of the microphone, albeit on a lower level, I understand how a few enthusiastic listeners make a difference. But it has to be beneficial to Chai's, or they can't afford to present musicians. That's why many places have tip jars. My last gig was a tips only job. I made $6 and some change. Probably was overpaid for my musical abilities. But a set of strings for my 12 string ate that up. Actually, Wanda-Claus gave me strings for Christmas- sort of an endowment for the arts. I don't mind paying for what I enjoy, if I can afford it. Sitting outside for free,I would feel like I wasn't really there, and worse, like I was bootlegging.
These are just the ramblings of my warped sense of "fittin". I hope I'm not coming on too serious.

I'm one of those "I gotta be inside and be able to see -- as well as hear -- the musician(s)", too. Preferably, front row center!

But here in the islands, not everyone has the $$$ to do that...but they can still get to hear some of the music "live", albeit without the benefit of also seeing the talented musician(s).

That's just me, letting my mouth run without thinking. As wonderful as the food and entertainment are at Chai's, it is an expensive restaurant. Of course, we were on vacation, and expected to spend more than was sensible. Plus, we skipped indulging ourselves for our anniversary, and indulged when we got to Hawaii instead.
