My elderly uncle picked up a uke and sang this song when I was visiting him in Hawaii a couple weeks ago and said the name was "Wai Kaulana", but I can't find it in the usual places. Anyone recognize it?

Jesse,
I think the proper title is "Na Wai Kaulana". You can hear it on the "Moe Keale Live at Waikiki" CD (track 10) and on the Richard Ho'opi'i CD, "Ululani" (Track 14) in falsetto style. It sounds close to your MP3. I didn't see it on Huapala.org though. |

Mikaele, I think "Na Wai Kaulana" mentioned above is the one by Iz and Uncle Richard Ho'opi'i that begins something like "Ka aupuni, aupuni o Maui, he iniki i na wai eha..." That is one I'd enjoy having the lyrics for, too.
I listened to the sound clips and the Owana Salazar song isn't the one either. Hmmm.
I think the term "wai kaulana" is common in mele pana, songs about a place.

When I think about the sweet big island songs that the older big island guys would sing, I mean the real old folks, the song called Paliakamoa comes to mind. This is a mele pana or place name song that speaks of the love for and significance of a particular area. In this case, I’m just guessing because I don’t know your uncle or what particular song it was that he sang, but this came to mind. The opening words were from the chorus and they may have been lae kaulana instead of wai kaulana.
Paliakamoa is an old song from the late 1800’s and it has taken on a life of its own with different versions. Paliakamoa translates to cliff of the chicken. It is about the promontory of Upolu, the northernmost point on the big island in North Kohala. The profile of the point itself is very similar to the cliffs of Northern California.
I was lucky enough to spend some time in my youth there, doing some fishing or pounding ‘opihi. There we would drive up to the cliff in the jeep on the calm side of the point. Tie the rope to the bumper and climb down to the water with our paint scrappers and rice bags to put the ‘opihi in. Sometimes the rope didn’t reach the water and you had to let go and fall into the water – a drop of about ten or twenty feet. Taking only the ‘opihi that we needed, we would swim along the cliff until we got to a low point near the old airport where we would get out and walk back to the jeep or car.

www.Huapala.org has another explanation of the reference to "uwea hao".
"Honoipu is a small inlet with a boat landing named Paliokamoa, where a steam engine powered cable, loaded and unloaded supplies from ships in the early part of the 20th century. "

Wow, I love this song. I'm lucky enough to have Gary Haleamau's greatest hits CD - his version has a tiple or taropatch uke doing a cool latinesque rhythm, western swing fiddles, and Gary's exquisite voice. I've been listening to it compulsively since Peter Medeiros identified the song.

Many thanks Auntie for the link.It shows how far a song can drift from the source. Like a game of opossum, the song came to me via my uncle ('ona'ona loa!) singing his bastardized version under a mountain apple tree in Kahalu'u and without resources like these noted here I wouldn't know any better.
