Aloha kakou!
Kaniala ko'u inoa. My name is Daniel and I live and play in California right now in a small town called Port Hueneme next to Point Mugu Naval Air Force Base.
I used to play reggae music with Butch Helemano in the 90's.
I first started learning how to play local style music from a friend (Charles Akana III) in Honolulu back in the 80's. I listened to alot of KCCN 1420 AM back then.
Currently I have a strong desire to continue learning slack key music. I attended some workshops a couple of years ago but I have been too busy to make any since then.
If there is anyone that knows about workshops that will be happening in Southern California I would like to learn about them. I haven't noticed any postings here lately for CA.
The last workshop I attended had Dennis Kamakahi, his son and Herb Ohta Jr, as well as Keoki Kaahumoku. It was sponsored by Patrick Landeza and I enjoyed the entire experience. Want to do it again.

Aloha Kaniala -- Welcome to Taro Patch. You will find lots of nice folks here who like to share their expertise and knowledge with you. We do plenny wala`au also. Hah - I work for Defense Department and just sent some equipment to Port Hueneme today. Small world, yeah? All the way froom Cleveland, OH to Port Heuneme.
I have a picture of Butch Helemano which Kathleen Pahinui sent to me -- a picture of her and Butch and Bla, also one of Butch when he did pule for returning the Waimea Valley lands to Hawaiian control.
Are you doing the old songs, slack key style or are you playing more modern stuff slack key style? Willie K. plays guitar wonderfully in both old and new ways.
Send an e-mail to our friend PuaKai -- I am sure she can tell you where you can find kanikapila.
At any rate, E Komo Mai, and please join us in our discussions! |

Aloha e Kaniala, Try to get ahold of Lowell, Sylvia and Nani Edgar up there. They have a halau, and as you know, you'll find lots of music if you can hook up. Also, there are some folks east of you out in the San Fernando Valley... IF you do get down south a bit - try to come to Bob's on Friday night - 4 - 8:00 PM - very near intersection of 405/110/91 fwys. When I can pull enough together for a kanikapila, folks come from further away that Pt Hueneme.... Dusty and Sheila come up from Valley Center, and sometimes Jerry and Diana come down from Vacaville. Or if you want to come down, we'll try to work out getting together. I just met another slacker at George Kahumoku's workshop who lives in WLA, and there are several others around here - Long Beach, etc. Watch the workshop section for workshops. George was here this last March and was kind enough to give us an excellent 2-hour class in Torrance. aloha, n |

Thanks for the support! I am playing both styles. I have learned all of Ozzie's published tablature and I am very slowly going thru and learning Keola's music in his beginner book. I sing and I write (on rare occasions) when inspired to put pen and paper together. My last attempt, I wrote a song for Dennis Kamakahi at a workshop I attended using the vamps he taught us. Glad to be part of the community. |

I used to live in Wai'anae not too far from you. I went to LCC/HCC/and UH Manoa. Playing kiho'alu is helping me deal with being homesick for the islands. Also, I listen to live365 programs with Hawaiian music on them including one called Slack Key Paradise. |

I'd love that! Actually, I'd love to meet as many taropatchers as possible! What if a bunch of us could all get together somewhere and have a big kanikapila and wala'au session? That would be so much fun! |
