Oh, yes...sure did. When Paul gets home, I'll have him expound, since he is also a 12-string afficianado. That's why some of those songs sound so nice and jangly.

Here I am. I'm the official Certo Famiglia Historian of the 12 string guitar. By default, 'cause I don't know nuttin'. The liner notes to Best Of The Gabby Band, 1972- 1977 list Gabby on 12 & 6 string guitar, Steel guitar, bass, ukulele & vocals. I'm pretty sure he also played mandolin, but apparently not on this album. Patrick Landeza told me Gabby played 12 string rythem guitar on the vesion of Hi'ilawe with his sons. Gabby appears to be playing a 12 on the cover picture on Rabbit Island Music Festival as well. It's not a close up shot'cause they had to fit all 37 of the band in the picture.Well, maybe it's only 7 players. Cyril Pahinui(we think) is playing a banjo on that shot.Which leads to the question: If it was in the house, did Gabby learn to play it? If it was in my house, I would try. What I would attempt, and stink at, Gabby would have excelled at. I bet he could play anything he tried, like a lot of Bluegrass/ Old Time musicians. Some folks just got it in 'em.

"A master banjo player isn't the person who can pick the most notes. It's the person who can touch the most hearts." Patrick Costello

You can watch Gabby play the 12 string on the Gabby Pahinui - Friends & Family video.

Oops... According to mele.com, this video is now out of print. (Sorry Piff. I couldn't help myself.)

Here is what Kathleen and Bla Pahinui have to say about Gabby's guitar.....

Aloha Wanda -

Gabby did play the 12-string and Cyril inherited his guitar when he passed on. I believe he still has it. Cyril played the banjo on the Rabbit Island album. It was a $1.98 one from the Piggly Wiggly!
