Hot diggety dog! Guess who is retiring! DoD offered an early retirement option, so I took advantage of it. Come the new federal fiscal year (October 1), I shall become a lady of leisure. I can stay home and clean the house and have a hot gourmet meal waiting on the table when my hard-working husband gets home. Perhaps I can lounge and eat bon-bons all day. Maybe I'll take up `ukulele. Maybe I'll read a book or two a day. Maybe I'll get serious about learning Hawaiian language. Who knows. There are so many opportunities and possibilities. Work gets in the way of so much.

Hip-hip-hooray!

Congratulations Wanda !! Now's the best time to test that practice and dedication and see how far you get with the talent that you have. Maybe next time at Honey's you can do a Fran Guidry and play with the house band. Maybe that cutie Ocean will back you up. It's a goal to strive for. Next time I'm back at Kaneohe I'd love to play with the guys at Honey's.

I might have to retire too, so I can stop you turning kolohe.

Well, congratulations to you, too Captain Mike! Yes, Paul has his hands full, but after 35 years, I reckon he likes it. I think I will clean out my dresser drawers, clean out the closet, clean behind the refrigerator, clean the back porch, play with my kitty, read some books, try the piano some more if my hands will cooperate, maybe sew some curtains and pillows and stuff; there is just a world of possibilities waiting for me. I am as giddy as a child iin a candy store. These next two months will probably be like the longest in my life. Kiinda like being toward the end of pregnancy...can't wait til its over, but kiinda scare of how it will be after...you know your life will never be the same. But, looking forward to it, just the same as you couldn't wait for your baby to be born. I've been working since I was 14....time to rest for a bit. I've already got contractors calling wanting me to consult for them after I retire to write ISO 9001 quality programs for them (no can do -- standards of conduct -- they'll send me away to Ft. Leavenworth).

Congratulations, Wanda! I will be joining you on (coincidentally) the same date. I just got a confirmation letter from Social Security that I am approved and will start collecting then!

Aloha,

Advice to Wanda from Dan, one of my co-workers: "Don't take any job you can't do in bunny slippers."

It is getting closer and closer to retirement time. I was giddy as can be when I first signed the papers. Now I feel really weird. I have always been defined by my job...by what I "do"...wife, mother, secretary, training coordinator, quality assurance specialist. Without a job, I don't know who I am or who I will be. I am kind of mixed up right now. Very happy to be retiring (especially when I think of Cleveland winters that I will not need to drive in). But kind of reluctant at the same time. Whenever I meet someone new, they always as "what do you do for a living". Or even simply "what do you do". Now I will have to say nothing. Therefore, I do not know who I am and I'm kind of nervous to find out. What I mean is that I was very good in my job, winning awards and accolades and given great respect. Now I don't think I will get the same acclaim of the kitchen floor shines or if the furniture is polished.

Any of you other retired folks out there have any words of wisdom to share? Any coping mechanisms?

Mahalo nui loa.

I've heard people respond to "What do you do?" with:

"Enjoy the fruits of my many years of labor!"

"Whatever I please!"

"More now than before I retired!"

"Study life."
