Word on the street is that Barry Flanagan (of Hapa fame) has completed a new solo release titled "Instrumental Peace." I do not have any additional information at this moment but will post more soon. The CD is expected to hit stores some time in May.
Barry recently completed a California tour with his current group Mele Hula featuring Ernie Cruz, Jr. (Ka`au Crater Boys), Charles Ka`upu, and Amy Hanaiali`i Gilliom. A couple of people have emailed me offline, but it would be great if someone who went to the show could post about it here at the performance review forum.

i should rename this thread "one reason i love hawaiian music".
i was coming out of class today (i'm a professor) and while discussing with a small mob of students what might be on the upcoming final my cell phone rings. i answer it in a somewhat professional but quick manner, and i hear "hi, this is barry flanagan". after a few seconds in which he tells me that he's returning a call i left with his service about an instructional book, it clicks - this is indeed the barry flanagan of hapa on the horn.
early on someone had posted a phone number to call for uncle ray to check if he had any of his instructional slack-key book. i'd love to have a copy, so i called the number. i got the standard "the number you have called has been changed. the new number is ....", so i called that number. that dumped me into a rather generic voice mail service, and so i left a somewhat long message, apologizing if i had the wrong number but i was looking for kane's slack key book".
i have no idea (nor does barry) how this second number happened to be him.
he's going to ask uncle ray and get back to me (!) he also told me that he's related to ray - it turns out that kane has some irish blood in him...
the few brushes i've had with the hawaiian music "industry", such as it is - george and keoki kahumoku, ozzie kotani, roy sakuma, cyril pahinui - they seem completely at ease and unaffected by their status. what a pleasure it has been.
aloha, keith

Aloha Keith,
Oops, sorry, my mistake. I have often worked on this website late at night, so late that I sometimes start losing my mind. I accidently posted Barry's number instead of Uncle Ray's in the book reviews.
FYI... Uncle Ray's phone# is 808-668-8682.
I apologize but suspect that you are not too upset with Barry Flanagan phoning you back and all. I wish Barry called me everytime I made a mistake. You are 100% correct about Hawaiian musicians. My experience has been the same. Sometimes I wonder if it is the music I love or the people. The beauty is that it can be both in this case.
Great story... thanks for sharing.

Aloha Keith,
That *is* a great story! It's also fun to know that Ray has some Irish in him :-) I wish Hapa hadn't broken up, but these things happen. Does anyone know what Keli'i, the other half, is doing now?
