Taught by Orville Johnson (don't know who da heck).

There is a whole series of guitar picking lessons, various styles.

Looks like most of these lessons came from: http://learnrootsmusic.com/

If you click on the Hawaiian style lap guitar, you can hear the instructor playing Akaka Falls, and wow, does it ever sound nice.

Orville Johnson lives in Seattle and plays bluegrass, blues, folk, country, and, apparently, Hawaiian too. He is as funny as he is talented. Orville is one of the founders (and monarchs) of "Mongrel Folk" along with Mark Graham. Check out their website http://www.mongrelfolk.com/. Check out Orville here http://www.orvillejohnson.com/

My favorite song of Orville's is called "Mambolaya" on his CD "Slide and Joy" featuring another terrific Seattle artist, vibraphonist Susan Pascal. My favorite Mongrel Folk song is "Life Is Hard, but Life Is Hardest When You're Dumb." (Mongrel Folk songs aren't novelty songs. They're funny, but the guys have great chops as well.) I know Retro knows him, and I'm quite sure Slipry 1 does too.

Orville is a gem. Didn't know he played Hawaiian music, either. Small woild.

Mark Graham is the author of legions of truly wonderful, twisted songs. Wanda, you and Paul probably know his "Zen Gospel Singing" through recordings and performances of autoharpist extraordinaire Bryan Bowers.

These videos (the ones that say From: guitarlesson) are clips from Bruce Lamb's instructional DVD series. http://www.thegtw.com/

Mark, I do know Zen Gospel Singing, but from a Springfield, Ohio dulcimer group, Sweetwater. They operate an All Dulcimer station on live 365. I think Bryan Bowers has produced or engineered at least one of their albums.

One of our regulars at the open mic performed Zen Gospel Singing at times.

Sadly our open mic has come to a close after almost 6 years at various locations. The last venue applied for a liquor license and would have to get a cabaret license to have live music, which they did not want to pursue. Maybe by the new year we'll have another location. Lots of friendships have been made through the open mic.

Mark said that after he became a Bhuddist, he missed gospel singing, so he wrote the song for self satisfaction.

Orville showed up at the Wakinekona festival a few years ago and jammed with the uncle guys in the parking lot. Good fun!
